Anyone know why I get this error in Windows Search?
What is 'winrt' doing in a x64 system, anyway?

This is a Warning - not an Error. As such, it's not critical for your system/application functioning.

Event Viewer displays these types of events:
Error
A significant problem, such as loss of data or loss of functionality. For example, if a service fails to load during startup, an Error event will be logged.

Warning
An event that is not necessarily significant, but may indicate a possible future problem. For example, when disk space is low, a Warning event will be logged.

Information
An event that describes the successful operation of an application, driver, or service. For example, when a network driver loads successfully, an Information event will be logged.

There are many reasons that a crawl could not be completed, but in this case it's because some parameter is incorrect (resulting in an invalid argument - the 0x80070057 number). Are you trying to do a search and the search keeps failing?

Why does it say RT? Probably because they re-used the code between the 2 OS's - rather than rewrite it specifically for each OS.
And, most users won't ever see it as they don't delve this deeply into the OS's innards.

Same warning here as well every time search/indexer runs. So annoying. Under Windows 8 I didn't have this error. It started when I upgraded to Windows 8.1.

Is this just a bug in Windows 8.1?

It could be a bug
It could be an incompatibility with some other software on your system
It could just be a coincidence

If searches still complete with the expected results, then I don't think that there's a problem here. To test, try searching for things that you know that you have. See if actual errors/missing info shows up during the search (NOT in Event Viewer).

I've always disabled search until yesterday when I decided to enable it again. I'm also on 8.1 and started getting the same Event log message. I don't think it is produced doing a search. The three errors I see right now have have date and times of:

Warning 11/3/2013 1:54:11 PM Search 3036 Gatherer

Warning 11/3/2013 9:54:11 AM Search 3036 Gatherer

Notice how the times are all the same for minutes and seconds? I've done lot's more searches than three. Almost looks like a scheduled task is kicking these off although I can't find which one if any. I always get the first message right after I start Windows.

I installed 8.1 as a VM using Vbox to test this out. I also got these errors on my VM system but only after I did a rebuild on the index. Until then I didn't get any even after I started Windows.

As far as the winrt:// designation goes doesn't that refer to the Modern Apps? Perhaps there is a bug in indexing Modern Apps? Just a guess.

I did a clean, fresh install of Windows 8.1 and still had the same warning. Now for the past 4 days I haven't had any search warnings. Odd.

I went into the Registry and made a few changes that so far hasn't produced the error message. I should have done them one at a time to see which one did the 'trick'. Basically I did a Registry scan for the winrt:// string as it appears in the Event Log. There are some keys that appear to control whether this file should be scanned. I set these to zero. I also found out you could add a new key to prevent Search from processing files. I also added this and maybe this was the thing that did it. Here's what I added. The file name might be different for you so change it if you decide to add it.

Below is the solution to remove this error -

Run gpedit.msc
In Local Group Policy Editor, Select Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Search.
In Search, double click on Default excluded paths.
In Default Excluded Paths, First select Enabled in the upper left corner. Then click on the Show… button next to ‘Default Excluded Paths’.
In Show Contents, add “winrt://{xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}/” (without quotes) and then click OK

Next force Windows Search Service to re-index.

Stop the service using services.msc – Windows Search or from Administrator: Command Prompt – net stop wsearch
Edit the registry key HKLM_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows Search/SetupCompletedSuccessfully and set it to 0
Start the service using services.msc – Windows Search or from Administrator: Command Prompt – net start wsearch

Just got this on fresh install this morning first time happened but I'm on Win 8.1 Pro 64
SetupCompletedSuccessfully
Is not present in the registry on my edition.

Have the file paths changed since June 2015?
