BSOD: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE help please

Hi all,

Driving me up the wall this ! As new Sony Vaio Pro 13 laptop which originally came with W8 - I then clean installed W8 Pro as I had a licence already and now have upgraded to 8.1 Pro (MSDN)

Problem is, while everything was fine in W8 Pro, in 8.1 I can't sleep (lid closed) or shutdown but restart is fine.
Soon as I close the lid or shutdown, it feels like it's hung, power light remains on and eventually turns off.

Digging further, it seems a BSOD has occured every time this has happened : DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
Using bluescreenview, it states the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE 0x000009F with ntoskrnl.exe and then the address for that.

Unsure what is actually causing it though as there is nothing major on this laptop as of yet.

In terms of drivers, I've tried graphics and wireless to grab the latest copies from Nvidia and Intel and also installed latest intel chipset drivers.
Nothing outstanding in terms of driver installs either.

Please find attached the mandatory log files via sf diag. Hopefully someone here can bottle it down to something I've done!

Cheers

Sorry to push this but I'm sure there is more damage going on with it not shutting down each time than good so would appreciate if someone can help out with the logs.
I may just bite the bullet and format tomorrow again but this time test @ each driver installation providing it lets it get that far

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

Only 1 Windows Update installed. Most systems have 26 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

NETwbw02 is blamed in each of the memory dumps. It's related to your Intel DualBand Wireless drivers. Please download and install the latest Win8.1 drivers available for this device.

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.
Processor may be overclocked!
Expected Frequency: 1800
Actual Frequency: 2394
Overclock Ratio: 1.33

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Apologies for the bump earlier - it was a mixture of a lot of frustration and annoyance
I did finally get to the bottom of it minutes before your reply - It was not actually Windows 8.1 or the drivers causing it but Virtualbox causing the issue.
I decided to start again, this time shutting down the machine each time a driver was installed - obviously very tedious with 25 or so drivers to install from Sony but they all worked fine. I then got to Virtualbox which was the only non-hardware driver installed (along with the virtual machine app itself)....shut it down and bang - bsod.

Uninstalled it, no issues.
Reformatted once more without virtual box and it's running extremely well.

I can only guess it is the USB and/or network adaptor it installs

Now in terms of answering your questions:
Windows Update - at the time, I only had the ones installed available. Office 2013 got a few more in later but for Windows, even currently, I only had about 4 to install under 8.1

Intel WiDi, it has not allowed me to install the latest but was happy with the Sony driver - will look into this

Overclocking - interesting as it is not overclocked. I can only assume the Sony settings are doing it without me knowing?
It's a 4th generation Haswell Machine (Sony vaio Pro 13 i7)

Once again, thank you for your response - appreciate you probably have a day-job too!

On another note, is gathering BSOD analysis difficult/ie: something I can do too?

No need to apologize for the bump - but it actually hurt you in getting a response.
I answer posts in the forum in reverse chronological order - so the oldest one's get my attention first. The forum sorts them by the last post date - so yours was slotted in the 1 day old section when it was actually 2 days old (when I finally got to it).

I work as a PC Tech during the day.

I've had my suspicions about Virtual Box and Win8 - but haven't seen anything concrete until now. We'd have gotten to it eventually, but I'm glad that you found it sooner rather than later!

The foundations of BSOD analysis is fairly simple:
Just FYI - here's how I do BSOD analysis':
- first I rule out 3rd party drivers (over 90% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I rule out hardware (less than 10% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I look at Windows problems (less than 1% of BSOD's are due to this - as long as Windows Updates are fully up to date).
But the nitty gritty details get a bit complicated and require a lot of experience - but there just aren't that many people who do it.
Here's a link to get you started: BSOD

Most of the problems are that we don't get a lot of feedback - so figuring out a problem can take a long, long time. For example, I've been noticing Virtual Box drivers appearing in BSOD's since around the time that Win8 came out - yet yours is the first confirmation that Virtual Box was the actual cause of a problem. Now we have to consider if your experience is an isolated problem - or if it's the "tip of the iceberg". What this means to me is that I'll be looking for Virtual Box in dumps from now on - and will suggest uninstalling it (especially when I see network problems).

If possible, could you please generate another set of the BSOD reports - so I'd have a set of "before" and "after" reports on Win8.1?
Still very little info on it out in the wild, so I'm trying to build a driver listing for it (and I'm having troubles with VM's on my system). Thanks in advance!

EDIT: About the overclock - I suspect it's an auto-overclock type thing in your UEFI. Something like Turbo/SpeedStep/etc Your's is the 2nd one I've run into today (and it's only 7:35am here) - the other was a Lenovo. Gonna have to look into changing my canned speech about that!

Will give the the BSOD link a read at the gym tonight - best bit of cardio material I've seen in a while :- )

In terms of before/after reports, the only issue there is I rebuilt the laptop from scratch without VirtualBox so unsure whether you would get anything from the report tool ? Obviously the rebuild was after the confirmation that it was that (ie: install = BSOD, uninstall = fine install = BSOD uninstall= fine)

The overclock - very possible - You do tend to notice a jump in speed via HWinfo - a lot more than I have in my previous machines. Unfortunately, the BIOS Sony embed are less than helpful to the point it's only really good for boot order and turning on/off virtualisation
