Hi, I'm having a freezing issue on a recently built PC. It seems to occur when left idle for awhile. I've noticed it seems to happen when left on for about a day. I get no warnings, my mouse, keyboard and intuos tablet stop working and my computer just freezes. I have to hardboot to get it back up. I originally thought it was Google Chrome causing this, but it still happens after I uninstalled it. I have updated to the latest BIOS version, this issue was happening even before this update, and re-installed video drivers.

I can't narrow this down myself at this point. Attached are my logs. Hopefully someone could shed some light on what could be causing this behavior.

Also I don't put my computer to sleep or hibernate, I have these options disabled. And have never had my PC freeze during gaming.

I will not be the one doing a formal analysis on your logs but the fact that you never mentioned a BSOD specifically grabbed my attention. Moreover, you stated that this normally happens after the PC has been turned on for a long period of time. So, I peeked at your Event Viewer Logs and I see many ACPI thermal warning logs which probably indicates your issue is heat-related.

With that said, I would recommend a good general cleaning and also monitor your system temperatures via any means available (eg, motherboard temp monitors, GPU-Z, etc). Also, if you have anything overclocked, I would recommend returning to normal operation to see if that might also resolve your issue. Good luck.

Update:
I just saw the "recently built PC" so maybe its an air flow design issue as well. Sorry I missed that!

Another update:
Also I don't put my computer to sleep
Allowing it to sleep may help or cure this issue.

Hmm, yeah I did have a peak inside to double check nothing was out of place. All cables are secure and I have no visible dust. The computer sits above the carpet on a metal stand connected to my desk.

Running Speedfan on my PC I get fairly low temps:
GPU: 34c
HD1: 39c (HDD)
HD0: 31c (SSD)
Temp1: 28c
Temp2: 30c

CPU temps are hang between 15c - 18c

Could there possibly be a setting somewhere saying when the PC is left idle for awhile it drops volts or something to that effect causing a heat issue/power issue? A BIOS setting perhaps? Nothing I see in Windows would cause that behavior as far as I can see.

EDIT: Saw the sleep comment, I don't put my work computer to sleep and it works perfectly after days left alone. I guess each one is different.

Also to note, I'm only overclocking my memory. Using an XMP profile to do so. I checked the profile settings against Corsair's recommendations. I'm using 4x8 Corsair Vengeance low profile memory.

I did run memtest overnight on them once before with no errors. Going to give it a go again tonight just to double check them for errors.

Hi again fullofclovers,

Your temps look good but your CPU temp is really hard to believe. In fact, I have never run across a CPU temp that low. Now, all of your reported temps are in sharp contrast to the reported ACPI thermal issues, and since your computer is freezing after long periods of idle time, I have to stick with my original analysis.

However, I think your comparison of leaving your work PC on with no issues is not an apples-to-apples comparison because you have a fairly high-powered rig and I doubt that your work computer is even in the same ballpark as that one.

In summary, I know of no BIOS setting or Win 8 option to stop your computer from freezing; however, I can only recommend you try to let it sleep when not in use. BTW, those settings are adjustable so you could set them so it would only sleep after very long intervals of inactivity. I don't see how it would hurt to try it.
Good luck.

I'll give setting it to sleep a try.

Actually my work computer is pretty close to my system specs. I work as an environment artist at a game studio. We run some pretty graphically intense programs/game engine. I usually leave my work computer on so I don't have to sync files or close editors.

Here's a shot of my comp on light use.

Even when gaming things run smooth and temps don't go up to the point of concern.

Also, I'm using this CPU heatsink: XIGMATEK Dark Knight II SD1283 Night Hawk Edition

I see it but I'm still having trouble with the ACPI thermal event issues being reported. Now, maybe I'm all wrong but I still have to go with my sleep recommendation. Its something easy to implement and see what happens. Speaking of sleep.... Good night.

So I ran memtest last night and got 1 error within the first 20 mins. So I set my memory back to stock speeds and have been testing them for the past 14 hours with no errors.

I'm not sure now if this is a memory issue,PSU, or my motherboard.

I am using these memory sticks Corsair Vengeance Model: CML16GX3M2A1600C10

They advertise to run at 1600. And I'm using my BIOS setting memory profile to run them at the recommend speeds.

I'm now figuring this could be the root of my freezing issue? Would that totally explain the heat warning you are seeing in my event logs? I've opened my case up and don't feel any unusual heat coming from any one device. I'm not physically touching any components, just hovering my hand around to see if I can locate any potential overheating.

So I believe I fixed my freezing issue. I was unaware its not recommend to run XMP profiles for 2 kits even though they are the same speed/maker.

I'm trying to figure out these ACPI events you discovered. I believe my system to be cooled correctly. But am seeing a bunch of different events/errors in Event Viewer.

Whats odd is I'm getting these when I start my computer:
ACPI thermal zone \_TZ.TZ01 has been enumerated.

They throw 2 events at the same time every time I start my computer.

Also I'm seeing a bunch of these for each processor:

Processor 4 in group 0 exposes the following power management capabilities:
Idle state type: ACPI Idle (C) States (2 state(s))
Performance state type: ACPI Performance (P) / Throttle (T) States
Nominal Frequency (MHz): 3501
Maximum performance percentage: 100
Minimum performance percentage: 22
Minimum throttle percentage: 22

Anyone have a clue on this? I've been searching for hours and can't come up with a solution.

I checked my work PC for these events and discovered it too was throwing these events. So what gives? Guessing it's normal and there isn't any overheating happening?

Depends on the events and their type. Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Here is the file you requested. To note, these ACPI events happen when I turn the computer on. I haven't noticed them happening any other time other than a restart or power on. Also there are many more within a short timeframe as I've been trying to figure out a DHCP error I'm receiving and have been restarting a bunch.

I found a significant number of ACPI/PNP0A0A Warnings in the Admin event log.
Check for successful ACPI/PNP0A0A events in the Applications and Services Logs...Microsoft...Windows...Kernel-PnP log
Web posts about this revolve around Intel Management Engine Interface and Asus AI Suite - but the general consensus is that it doesn't hurt anything.

FYI, if the Event Level listed is "Information" - then there's probably nothing to worry about. It's just Windows going about it's business of checking (enumerating) things out.

Event Levels of "Warning" may/may not be safe to ignore - but they may point to potential problems (or even to things that impact existing problems)

Event Levels of "Error" must be investigated - but they may not impact your computing experience (for example, I tend to ignore apparently random DCOM errors when I'm troubleshooting).

"Critical" Event Levels require some sort of interaction with the OS. These can be a bit confusing, but usually they refer to a problem with Windows that Windows can't figure out. Usually caused by low-level drivers or hardware problems. Also, they may occur because Windows can't keep up with itself (you may get one with a BSOD crash, followed by the crash report (Event Level "Error") a little later on0.

All of the entries are helpful (and it's one of the great drawbacks of using the Admin Event Log - as it doesn't have Information entries). We look through the Admin Event log to find patterns, then through the System and Application Event logs to investigate the patterns in detail.

Again, just FYI, I will suggest checking power managment settings when I see the power management entries in the System Log file - and will suggest temperature monitoring when I see the thermal events. But these are just precautions on my part - not a firm diagnosis. I view Windows as a massive bunch of clues - and we have to use those clues to try and figure out exactly what's wrong.

Thank you John for taking the time to go through my logs and for the insight. I suppose it's fairly easy to look at all those events and overthink things that may or may not be an actual issue.

I did notice those ACPI/PNP0A0A Warnings as well. I tried uninstalling the driver linked to that Warning and reinstalling the AMDA00 driver from ASUS. But the warnings continue. I don't believe my PC has overheating issues. I see some of the threads from others mentioning the same warnings/ASUS driver. So I guess it's all good.

I am curious as to the temperature readings and wonder if the fact I did not install Windows 8 through UEFI mode I may not have accurate readings. Would that be the case?

I don't think that the method of installation would affect the accuracy.
And, it's easy to test if you install a 3rd party temp monitoring utility.

The point of all this was to stop the system from freezing. Does it still freeze?
