Win 8 Hibernate Crash

Hi all,

My hibernation stops working since last week.
Every time I hibernate, the hard disk flashes for unusually long (much longer than before). And then the laptop shuts down.
The next time I start the computer, a blue dialog jumps out "there is a problem ......"

Please find the dump file attached.

Thanks a lot for your kind help!

Hello badou,

I do not have the proper tools installed to do a comprehensive analysis but I did find some interesting facts:

Some applications are being terminated due to a lack of resources. This might indicate that your hard drive is filling up and/or you are running short of free RAM. Either one of those conditions could affect your ability to hibernate successfully. Any possibilities either of those conditions exist?

Hi JustATest,

Thanks a lot!
My hard disk was indeed full. Now I cleaned it and there are 8GB left, the problem is still there.
I have 4GB ram, even when I just restart windows and there are a lot of memory left, I can't hibernate either.

Will appreciate it a lot if you have further suggestions!

OK, first let's check the size of hiberfil.sys by doing the following:

Open up a command propmt and type the following: dir c:\ /ah

Post an image of the response like so:

Hello badou,

I was assuming you wanted to actively pursue a fix so I have been sitting here for 35 minutes waiting for you to respond. Moreover, I think you were about two steps away from a fix so I'll check back periodically (as my time permits) to see how you are making out and see if anyone has stepped in to help you. Now, I'm off on another adventure so good luck.

Thanks a lot. Sorry that I didn't check your reply on-time. Was trying to update drivers etc... But none works...
Here is the hibernating file.

Hibernating and sleep both don't work...

Just ready to walk out the door... OK, your hiberfil.sys is correctly sized for your quantity of RAM; however, it could have been damaged by your lack of hard drive space so the first step is to delete it and rebuild it as follows:

Open up a command prompt again and type the following messages:

To delete the file: powercfg /h off (wait for prompt return to signal finish)

To rebuild the file: powercfg /h on (wait for prompt return to signal finish)

Reboot and retest

I did that. The same problem.
I notice that whenever I connect to internet (through wifi or lan), the problem persists, on hibernating or shutdown or sleep.
However, if I disconnect from internet, there is no problem.

Is this useful for finding the root cause?

I see your story has changed a bit. Specifically you now added that sleep doesn't work either and you also added that it works OK conditionally. With that said, I was headed down the wrong path because I wasn't given the full details in the original post. Although, I should have assumed as much when you said you were busy updating drivers instead of performing the steps I recommended. Anyway, my advice going forward is to wait for someone to properly analyze your dumps and they can assist you further. Good luck.

When I posted this in the beginning, I only noticed that hibernate doesn't work.
I did all the steps you recommended. They don't work.
Then I started digging myself, and I found that it is the internet that cause the problem.
I didn't try to hide information or ignore your suggestions.

Thank you for that explanation. Please hang in there and one of our experts will be along (as time permits) to analyze your dump files. It was my mistake for intervening.

Don't go on the internet? (Haha - just kidding!) :0)

C: drive only has about 5% free space. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

These devices are disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?
Shrew Soft Virtual Adapter ROOT\VNET\0000 This device is disabled.

WAN Miniport (Network Monitor) #2 ROOT\MS_NDISWANBH\0001 This device is disabled.
Please enable both devices and then uninstall the ShrewSoft software.

The first 2 memory dumps blame NETwew00.sys while the latest 4 aren't as specific. Please:
- download the latest Intel wireless drivers for your system.
- uninstall the current wireless drivers
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

There's enough other stuff here that the Intel wireless drivers may not be to blame. If the BSOD's continue, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

    Screen Resolution
    800x600
    Hard Drives
One Samsung 1tB drive - 5400 rpm. Gonna switch to a 7200/10000 rpm or an SSD (if I can find $500 for a 1tB SSD!)
    - Switched to 500 gB Samsung 840 series SSD - WOW!!!
    PSU
Why do we ask this for laptops?
    Case
Silver with a neat Samsung logo
    Cooling
sub-par, gotta get around to working on it soon Worked on it - still sub-par! :(
    Keyboard

    Other Info
    I'm handsome and a snappy dresser :0)
Normally I don't interfere in topics that others are helping on. So it was luck that I saw the post looking for dump analysis (and that I had the time to do it!).

C: drive only has about 6% free space. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty) While you have freed up some space (and I'd expect the errors to decrease because of it), you must free up at least 10% in order to be sure that's not causing problems.

These devices are disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?
