BSOD/Freezing Problems

Hey there, I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this in, but I'm in need of a little advice.

Recently, my laptop's (Some sort of a Compaq) hard drive was dying, I was going to get it replaced but was told there's really no point; There's every chance something else would go soon if I did and I'm better off buying a new one, so I did. I got an Acer Aspire E1-531 about..2 months ago now? (Running Windows 8)

So fastforward to today, I've had no problems up until this morning. I started it up and everything was running fine so I thought I'd go ahead and give it a quick Virus Scan (I'm using Avast), I used the Quick Scan option and it got to about 18% then everything froze up and bam, Blue Screen. Something about a Kernel Data Inpage Error? I'm not sure. So it restarted and I figured I'd try again; Bam. Same thing. So I tried out Safe Mode and gave it a scan; 18% then it froze up but no BSOD this time.

Looking it up, it seemed like Avast wasn't entirely compatible with Windows 8 or something, so I grabbed Malwarebytes, this got up to about 20% and then my laptop froze up, no Blue Screen this time.

I am running a chkdsk of my C: drive now and it has reached 27% but hasn't progressed since then, It's only been about 30 minutes or so so I understand this could be normal, but I thought I would like to post here asking for some advice just incase things aren't going my way.

I'm not very tech savvy honestly, so any advice that is kept simple and understandable would be greatly appreciated; I'm very upset. This is a brand new machine!

Thanks in Advance for any help that is given.

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis: http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

For starters:
At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).
