Kernel-Power 41 (63) BSOD after recent Haswell upgrade

Hello everyone willing to read this!

I've been getting this >
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

This seemed to start happening after getting new motherboard, cpu, videocard and ram. These events only seem to log when I turn on my computer from a cold boot.

I did a clean install the other day with no drivers installed and still got the Kernel-Power critical error in my event log.

For the first time last night, I got BSOD while I was talking on Google+ and just browsing the web. Now that this issue is affecting my computer while I'm using it, I'd really like to fix this issue with someones help.

Event ID 41 is an error that says Windows doesn't know why it shut down. Most frequently they are due to hardware issues (to include overheating). As I've seen connection issues cause BSOD's, my first suggestion will be to double/triple check all connections to ensure that they are firmly connected (using the appropriate ant-static precautions).

Also, use this free tool to monitor the system temps: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Only 48 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 66 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

You have 3 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

Your Intel RAID storage driver (iaStorV.sys) dates from before mid-2013 (actually from 2011) and should be updated. Try this driver (I got this link on 10 Jul 2013):
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel+RST)&lang=eng
Use the SetupRST.exe file - the other 2 are the "preinstall" drivers for use when first installing an OS that doesn't have these drivers. If it doesn't install, post back and I'll research it further.

XENfiltv.sys dates from 2009, please either update the program associated with it to the latest, Win8 compatible version - or uninstall it from your system. It most likely belongs to your Sound Blaster Tactic(3d) Sigma device

Are you running Driver Verifier? I see the verifierext driver present in the Drivers List report. If running it, please turn it off for now. You can turn it off by opening verifier.exe, then select "Delete existing settings" and clicking on the Finish button. Reboot in order to have the changes take affet.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics. Let us know the results and we can move on from there.

Hey Usasma, I have already checked the connections inside my case. I could reseed the ram, and video card though.

The temp in my case for CPU has been around 28-35c, mobo 40c. I have a corsair h100i water cooler, and good air flow. In addition, my computer is not actually crashing while I'm using it, with 1 exception. I'm getting these critical errors in my event log only when my PC is turning on from a cold boot. When it turns on, I have gotten a small message saying "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly." So I don't think it's a Temp issue. Like I mentioned before, I had just did a clean windows 8 install with no drivers, no programs, nothing, and was still getting this same error. I was thinking might be PSU myself, but I don't have another PSU, yet. I'm also not OC at all. My bios is all defualt settings.

I will get the rest of my windows updates.

My PSU is a 850w Thermaltake TK bronze. 16 months old.

I can uninstall the Sound Blaster Tactic(3d) Sigma device. This driver was a plug n play driver, I didnt install this myself.

I'm not running Driver Verifier.

I will follow your suggestions for the SSD.

I'll get back to you after I'm done. Thanks a lot for your time and help.

Okay, back with an update.

I was successful in updating the intel raid storage driver.

Removed both Sound Blaster Tactic drivers, I'm not sure if that's what I needed to remove.

I couldn't update the firmware on my SSD because I was getting hung on the booting screen when its reading my iso image. Getting stuck on the "scaning disk partitions to create /etc/fslab"

Windows updates are all done.

Temps inside my case are around 34c for CPU and 38c on motherboard.

I'm only getting the critical error when I shutdown my PC all the way. Then when powering it back up I get a event log almost every time.

It's not causing me to crash, but its still bothering me it's not working properly.

Haswell has new power management features. Are there any bios settings that might automatically adjust. Such as over clocking automatically depending on cpu load. This would especially happen during boot. I saw a similar problem with my new video card.

That is a good suggestion.

I just spent 2 hours checking video card, ram, dvd player, other hdd. I even tested another PSU. I removed each piece of hardware one by one and reboot. Got a critical error each time. I've just done a clean install of win8 on my 500gb hdd and not my SSD. Going to test it out. So far not getting any critical errors on reboot. Im updating win8 right now.

After only installing basic drivers and windows updates I'm still getting critical errors on my HDD.

I was looking at my event error log and noticed another error,Windows failed fast startup with error status 0xC00000D4.

So I've turned off the fast startup boot and so far I'm not getting anymore critical kernel-power logs in the event viewer. Going to keep testing it before I load windows 8 back on my SSD. I might have figured it out.

Fast startup was an issue back in the early (pre-release) days of Win8. I've seen one other instance recently - so maybe there's an update that's not compatible with certain hardware? (just speculation)

Also, I noted that you had an error when attempting to flash the firmware on your SSD. Please make sure that the system is 100% stable BEFORE installing the SSD. That way, if problems do appear, you've already identified the possible source.

Good luck!

I checked the computer this morning before heading to work and still getting 41 (63) error when booting up from cold start, but when I turn off the fast boot, I dont get it. Only problem is, if I turn the fast boot back on, it didn't cause a 41 (63) so I'm not 100% sure if thats the cause or not.

I've trouble shot every piece of hardware on my computer and the root cause is something in the Windows config, BIOS config, or motherboard. My BIOS has been updated to the latest version.

I had 1 other issue last night and this morning, my PC didn't post the first time I turned it on. I had to turn PSU off and start again, then it booted just fine. I'm going to call asus and maybe send my board in for repair.

Leave Fast Startup disabled. Then let it run for a while to see if problems recur.
If so, then we can troubleshoot them without worrying about the Fast Startup interfering with it.

A failure to post is a concern. Do you have a BIOS or UEFI? The more I see issues with BIOS and Win8, the more convinced I am that UEFI might be required for Win8. Did you check to ensure that no settings were changed in the BIOS/UEFI? Win8 communicates with the BIOS/UEFI much more than Win7 did.
