Getting a BSOD at high stress

This is my first post, so just wanted to say hi to everyone here!

So I render video on a fairly consistent basis using WMM (everything else is very expensive). My problem is that I am forced to turn down my processing power to 99% under advanced power options, otherwise it crashes. Why does it do this? It is simply a big hassle for me to do this, so I'm not sure if it is a purely heat problem or if it is a software problem. Attached is my minidump written today at 7/11/13, and BlueScreenView shows ntoskrnl.exe as the problem.

Thanks for your help!

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis: http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

ntoskrnl.exe is the kernel (core) of the Operating System. If it was to blame you'd be having many more problems other than the occasional BSOD. It's more likely that a 3rd party driver is interfering with ntoskrnl.exe and that's causing the BSOD's.
Just FYI - here's how I do BSOD analysis':
- first I rule out 3rd party drivers (over 90% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I rule out hardware (less than 10% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I look at Windows problems (less than 1% of BSOD's are due to this - as long as Windows Updates are fully up to date).

Just a hunch, but please run these free diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics

The Wacom drivers below date from 2007/2009 - they must be removed. If you can't find an update for them, please uninstall them.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I uninstalled some programs which were associated with the problematic drivers, but I'm not sure if they are all removed. I rendered fine with WMM today, but when I tried Sony Vegas, it BSODed again. Attached are ALL of the files from the SF diagnostic tool, and the most recent crash occurred on 7/16/13.

Looks like you've done a good job!
AsUpIO.sys remains, but let's just keep an eye on it for now.

This BSOD blames video drivers. Please:
- download the latest, Win8 compatible drivers from World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies | NVIDIA
- uninstall the current video drivers
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

If the BSOD's continue, please perform the Video Tests listed on this page: Hardware Diagnostics

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

For the test you wish me to perform, would you like me to perform all the tests (some of them are very obscure as how to use them), or just the first, recommended one (furmark)?

Also, my computer crashes when rendering and having some other program open at the same time (e.g. chrome). Also, it randomly crashed today (7/23/13). Attached are all my minidumps. I really want to get this resolved.

Please help,
Thanks!!

There are 2 sections at the link I gave for Video Tests. Run them all to the best of your ability. All we're looking for from these tests is to see if they cause problems - the actual numbers don't really matter. The point of this is that, if the video stress tests point to video errors, then we have to suspect a hardware problem with the video card

Now it's time to test the AsUpIO.sys driver:
1) Create a Restore Point using System Restore
2) Create a Repair disc:
Win7 - Go to Start...All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc
Win8 - Press "WIN" and "R" to open the Run dialog...type "RECDISC" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
3) Test the System Repair disc to make sure that you can get to the System Restore entry when you boot from the disk (you may also want to try actually using System Restore to make sure that it works)
4) Download this free program (Autoruns for Windows) and use it to disable any instances of AsUpIO.sys that are starting (or any other Asus Hardware Monitor entries) (DO NOT DELETE - only disable by removing the checkmark in the left hand column)
5) Check in Device Manager (to include showing hidden devices from the View menu item) and ensure that any instances of AsUpIO.sys (or any other Asus Hardware Monitor entries) are "Uninstalled" (DO NOT DISABLE THESE).
6) Check in the Services applet (services.msc) to be sure any instances of AsUpIO.sys or any other Asus Hardware Monitor entries are disabled.
7) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename the AsUpIO.sys driver to AsUpIO.BAD (search the hard drive for it if it's not in C:\Windows\System32\drivers).

In the event that the system doesn't boot:

1) Boot from the System Repair disc and use the Command Prompt option to rename AsUpIO.BAD to AsUpIO.sys
Code:
ren C:\Windows\System32\drivers\AsUpIO.BAD C:\Windows\System32\drivers\AsUpIO.sys
2) Boot from the System Repair disc and use the System Restore option to restore the system to a point before the changes were made.

Good luck!

If the BSOD's continue after this, then we presume that this is a hardware problem - most likely the video card.
Then you'll have to run the full gamut of hardware diagnostics here: Hardware Diagnostics

Good luck!

So I completed all the tests without problem (ran them for 30 min), with only the Artifact Locator failing (because of system compatibility failure (32x/64x)). I renamed AsUpIO.sys to AsUpIO.BAD, then restarted, and the system is quite stable now, but still crashes when I render for longer periods of time. Is this just a heat problem? Attached are the minidump files, the most recent crashes occurring today at 7/31/2013.

So it crashed again today (8/6/13). I had already removed the Virtual Audio Cable driver. Does this mean I have to run Driver Verifier?

Also, I notice that it only crash right before Vegas 12 finishes rendering... hm...

As always, attached is the minidump.

It often takes 2 pages of posts before the problems are solved. In some cases it can take even more, but I think we're nearing the end here.

I wouldn't think that Driver Verifier would be helpful here. This appears to be a hardware problem, and is most likely with your video card. Unfortunately the tests haven't revealed any problem - so the next "test" is to try another video card. If you don't have one handy, then purchase one that you can return for a full refund (in case it's not needed)

I have a lingering suspicion about VMWare-like apps as they appear regularly in the BSOD's that I work on. This being said, there's no other evidence that they are causing crashes. But, IMO, it might be interesting to see if things stabilized after removing it.

Beyond that, this is probably a hardware issue. After trying another video card, the next steps are listed here: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

So, I would have to buy and return a video card? Hm...

Is there any other possible problem? I noticed the crash dump talked a lot about vegas 12... is there a problem with the program?

Most analysts will tell you that the Process Name entry is misleading. I only use it if the same process name shows up in ALL of the memory dumps (you'll need at least 4 or 5 to be sure). You've had 14 instances of Sony Vegas out of 23 memory dumps. While it's possible that it could be Sony Vegas, you haven't mentioned that it only occurs with that program. The "fix" is to uninstall Sony Vegas and see if the BSOD's continue.

Try re-seating the video card and cleaning the slot out, as I have seen a problem caused by that in the past. I've only seen this once, but it's easier/cheaper than using another video card, so it may be worth a try.

If you can't borrow another video card, then purchasing one is the way to go.
I suggest purchasing one that you can return as a precaution.
This is most likely a problem with your video card, so you may end up keeping the card that you purchased.

There is a lesser chance that it's something else (such as your motherboard), but motherboards are expensive also - and much more difficult to replace than a video card.
