    Crash into failure to start

Hello. The Acer Satellite P850 I purchased a month or so ago recently crashed, with the error given being 'Page Fault in Non Paged Area.' The crash screen also mentioned win32k.sys as the cause of the crash.

What is more problematic, however, is that after Windows 8 'collect[ed] information and [restarted the computer],' it seemed to get caught in a reset cycle. Upon powering up, the computer will whir for just a moment before either making a clicking or beeping noise. After making one of the noises, it powers off and powers back on again, only to repeat the cycle until the power button is held down.

I understand the error can be caused by many things, and that of them the most common of hardware-related causes is faulty RAM, but the noises and failure to start at all seem indicative of a problem with the hard drive. I cannot, unfortunately, collect or provide any dumps or reports due to this phenomenon. Am I correct in my limited understanding of what has happened, and is there anything I can do to fix this short of shipping it in?

    Thank you for your time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you boot it? Without any video visible, we can't run any tests to see what's going on.
If you're able to boot from a disk (and see some video), try these free, bootable diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics

If you can't see video, then there's not a whole bunch to do. Luckily for you the system should still be under warranty. Unfortunately for you, there's no easy way to backup your data (and it may void your warranty if you open up the case).

If you don't care about the data, then find out from the reseller what they do about manufacturer warranty repairs and have it diagnosed and fixed that way.

Presuming that it is the hard drive (a that's a long shot at this point) - You can replace the hard drive at your own cost and then reinstall Windows. If you haven't made recovery disks/drive yet, then you'll have to order them from the manufacturer (again, at your own cost). It'll save you a lot of time, but the HDD will cost around $100 (US) and the recovery drive can run from $20 to $70 (US) - they'll tell you the cost before shipping it.

Also, if it is the RAM, you can try using one RAM stick at a time to see if that helps. Be sure to remove the battery and the AC plug before opening the RAM compartment - and use anti-static precautions when handling the RAM.

I had a similar failure. When I start the computer the Win Logo comes up & then the dots start in a circle.

Then the screen turns black & the computer just keeps running.

I booted from the original Program CD & it goes through a refresh cycle for about 1/2 hour.

It reboots back in to the same hang up as in the original failure.

I have another computer running Win8.1 that I used to send this Email. There are so many bugs in it that it almost useless.

Tried to put an attachment on the Email & all it would is go to the "Cloud"

I guess I will have to use my Surface from now on.

Will probably have to reinstall win8. I can't even use the backup. Will have to reload & then use the backup.

Any ideas out there? Never had this type failure in all my years with windows.

Tully please start your own topic so that your problem can get the individual attention that it deserves.

Not being able to install Windows is suggestive of a hardware problem. Without the ability to boot from CD/DVD's and to see the screen there's not a whole bunch to do online. Replacing/removing parts is what we start with at work - but that's because we have a lot of spare parts on hand - this is usually too expensive for an individual to do.

The clicking noise definately points to a mechanical failure , as it's a laptop I'd say hard drive , beeping noise , depends on the number of beeps.

Page Fault in Non Paged Area is caused by faulty hardware , a corrupted NTFS parititon or a bad system service , in your case it's sounding like a bad drive again.

You might want to send it in for a service under warranty.
