Hi,

I have recently gotten a new machine built. from day 1 i've experienced a BSOD at the rate of approx 1 per hour.

There has been a number of differnt warning messages on these BSODs. The most common is driver_stack_overun_buffer

I checked the drivers and all appear to be up to date.

The minidump file is attached. Anyones Assistance with this one greatly appreciated

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8 64 bit
Only 39 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 66 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

NukeMetro is installed. Microsoft invested a lot of time and money into making Metro the default (and making it unchangeable). As such I'd have to wonder about the extent of problems caused by apps like this. I'd suggest uninstalling it temporarily - just in case it's causing problems.

Out of 11 memory dumps there were 5 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks usasma

I have installed the windows updates (74 in total now)
I have updated
V0700Vid.sys and removed SRTSPX64.SYS and
AppleCharger.sys
my SSD firmware also appears to be up to date.

After doing this I'm still getting blue screens; 'unexpected kernal mode trap' and 'kmode exception not handled'
I'm yet to check and update my motherboard drivers. hopefully this solves the BSOD
I wasnt aware nukemtero was installed. Might be a tricky one because i can't see it listed in uninstall programs or the c/program files.

I'll see how i go....

Please be advised that these fixes usually take at least two pages of posts before they're done.
Also, because it's a low-level error it may take even more work to figure out the problem.

The first steps are to fix things that I pointed out in my first post. That'll 1) fix Windows problems (with the updates) and 2) fix 3rd party driver problems.

We'll then review the next BSOD's and see what they seem to point at. We'll again fix any 3rd party driver issues that may appear.
At one point we'll have fixed all the likely 3rd party driver issues. It's at that point (if it's still not fixed) we'll conclude that it's a hardware problem - and then will work on hardware diagnostic procedures.

You can start the hardware diagnostics early (if you want to), that may save time if it discovers a hardware problem. Start with these: Initial Hardware Diagnostics If that doesn't find anything, then do the tests listed here: Additional Hardware Diagnostics (the full list of all suggested tests is at Hardware Diagnostics )

FYI (based on my own estimates) -
- over 90% of BSOD's are caused by 3rd party (non-Windows) drivers
- less than 10% of BSOD's are caused by hardware problems (to include broken
- less than 1% of BSOD's are caused by Windows drivers (this presumes that Windows has been fully updated)

Good luck.
