System Service Exception - Error on Shutdown

Hi,

I've just finished a new build and everything was fine.

I then put the machine to sleep for a few minutes. Hit the power button – black screen. Forced it off.

Restarted. Get some dump files and now when I attempt a normal shut down I get a blue screen, new dump and a restart sequence. The screen says something went wrong with your PC and needs to restart citing SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION.

Any help appreciated. File attached.

Edit: The minidump points to ntoskrnl.exe i think. The machine runs perfectly fine. It only happens when I tell it to shutdown. I installed programs and updates and it restarted fine. It's only on shutdown/sleep.

Turning off Windows 8 faster startup fixes this problem but I'd like to use that feature.

Hello Dominic B,

You say turning off fast startup fixes this issue; yes? So did you do a UEFI or Legacy BIOS Win 8 install? Also, do you have multiple fast boot options in your BIOS? What is the make/model number of your motherboard?

Thanks for the fast reply.

Turning that feature off means I'm able to shut down without any issue - no bluescreen. I installed from a Windows 8 x64 OEM disk. I installed whilst one ssd drive was in the system. I don't know if that answers your other question.

My build is:

CPU: i7 4770
GPU: Gigabyte HD7950 OC
MB: ASRock Z87-PRO4
ODD: Samsung SH-224DB 24x
SSD: Samsung 840 Series 250GB
HDD: Samsung SpinPoint FS 1TB HD103SJ (x2)
PSU: Corsair HX-650 V2 PLUS Gold
RAM: Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M1A1600C9 (1x8GB) DDR3
Sound: Creative USB Sound Blaster Recon 3D

Thanks.

I need to know if your BIOS is UEFI capable and if it was set that way when you installed Win 8. OK, here's a quick way to tell. When you boot, do you see the Win 8 logo appear or is it a message from your mobo manufacturer? Also, please provide a screenshot of your disk management view:

Mine is a UEFI installation:

Ok, I'm going to post this additional information before you respond. I am going to assume you have a UEFI installation and I am also going to assume you are trying to use the ASrock Ultra-Fast 1.5 second boot. If so, your graphics card must support UEFI GOP and from what I have quickly read, yours does not. My advice is to turn it down a notch and opt for the fast-boot (not ultra-fast). This should get you into Windows in about 6-7 seconds and UEFI GOP is not required for that configuration. Also, if you have any of those other FAST options turned on (fast ram, fast lan, etc), I would turn them off.

So it might be that motherboard setting or any of the FAST options in the motherboard settings. I'll try turning them off.

Just to be clear - there is no issue on boot. When I shutdown is when I get the bluescreen and when I choose Sleep a black (but still powered) screen without the ability to wake the PC up. I had been able to shut down the PC before as well.

Yes, the first logo you see will always be the ASRock logo but judging from your partition structure, you created a legacy bios Win 8 installation. So, first off, ignore everything I said in my previous post. So, do you have any fast boot options turned on in the BIOS?
You have fast-boot and ultra-fast boot available (I'm hoping not).

However, the best advice I can give you at this time is to set your bios to uefi defaults and do a clean install of Windows 8. If you decide to go this route, pay careful attention to the boot manager options for your optical drive. Specifically, you will have 2 options and if you want to go UEFI, then select the UEFI optical device option. This time, your installation will end up looking like mine in disk management. Once done, you can go back into your BIOS and select the fast-boot option which will get you into Win 8 in about 6-7 seconds. DO NOT USE the ultra fast boot option. I'm going to lunch now so I'll be back in an hour or so.

Thanks for your help. What troubles me is the fact that I have been able to shutdown normally with fast startup (which was enabled by default).

I have not seen this anywhere as an option.

clean install of Windows 8

Can I do this with my Windows 8 OEM disk or is an OEM disk a one time thing?

OK, you caught me going out the door. The ultra fast boot option is probably not showing up because you did not do a UEFI install. I forgot the options can change based on the type of install. So, you are OK and your install should be OK too. Sorry for the confusion. My mistake. Good luck.

I discovered some additional information. My PC went to sleep whilst I was away and when I went to wake it up the screen went on but it was all black. Howerver, I hit enter and the audio from the youtube video I had on started playing. So everything is working except the display. Does this help you in anyway?

I've upgraded my SSD firmware. I've updated my realtek audio drivers, I've installed 2 more motherboard related drivers and updated the BIOS. No luck so far.

More information! I can now perform the fast shutdown to some degree. My pc will shut down, then it sounds like the gpu powers up again... then shuts down. I then power the pc but my main monitor preference has changed, a new resolution of 1024 is chosen for it and instead of being in portrait it has switched back to landscape. I have a displayport to dvi adapter - I wonder if that piece of hardware is causing me this issue.
