Any help please? BSOD occurring a lot

Hi everyone was looking for some help regarding BSOD on windows 8.
I have a HP G62 laptop running windows 8 (bought with windows 7 installed) and its getting BSOD a lot. Its frustrating as it interferes with my work (web designer) and I cannot carry on.
I used to get the BSOD before but my screen would just go black or grey and I would have to shut down by holding the power button. This only seemed to happen when I was running on the battery, as soon as it was plugged in to the mains I never had any issues.
Now I am getting it whilst its plugged in.

I have ran seaTools and the short drive self test comes back as a fail, with the long generic test I got BSOD.

I don't have any external usb devices attached.

I have used the sf diagnostic tool and chose grab all. I have attached the zip file to this post.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds as if your hard drive is dead/dying. Please backup your data IMMEDIATELY!!!
You can try to run the tests inside of Windows (either use the Seagate Seatools for Windows or the Western Digital Data LifeGuard for Windows)
Depending on how you installed Win8, you may have left the HP system diagnostics on the system. Check the BIOS options when you boot up.

If you haven't created Recovery Disks - do so now! You may also need the HP Win7 recovery disks if the Win8 install was an upgrade.

There are enough signs here that I have to wonder about this installation. Should this be a pirated copy of Windows, please be aware that we may not be able to fix it (as the hacks that were done to activate it will cause the OS to behave differently than we expect it to). If that's the case, our efforts to help may just waste your time. Secondly, the forum rules prohibit assisting with pirated software - so the topic would be closed if that is the case.

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [DEL] DuplexSecure - FAQ [/DEL] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012
New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).

Please update your AMD chipset drivers immediately.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hi i don't have a win7 disk for it and can't create one because the hp software no longer works since I upgraded to windows 8.
I upgraded keeping old windows files and settings. The copy of windows 8 is genuine, I got the license off microsoft for free as I was a student.
Is HP diagnostics a bad thing if it's still on the machine?
I do have Daemon tools lite installed on the system.
I shall update the drivers and backup my data.
You say the hard drive may be dying, does this mean I would have to purchase a new one?Sorry for the silly question. Could I use my existing windows license to transfer the OS to a new hard drive?

Oddly I have not had bsod since I have allowed the screen to go off when not being used. Is the bsod normal to happen when screens are left on when not being used?

Thank you for taking the time out to assist with this, it is much appreciated.

I'm late for work, so this'll be quick:

See if you can get a copy of the Win7 disks from HP - it may be needed.
Although we don't support hacks, there are ways (available on the internet) that you can install your Win8 without physically having a copy of Win7 on the system.

If you have the HP diagnostics, you can use them to test your hard drive. It's not a bad thing to have.

You must remove Daemon Tools according to the instructions I gave previously - it is known to cause BSOD's

If the drive is dying, yes you'll need to purchase a new one. They're easy to put in - it usually only involves removing the battery and ac adapter, opening a cover plate and unscrewing the hard drive from it's carrier (aka "caddy") We'll walk you through this if necessary.

Transferring the Windows license is possible, but it's how we're going to do it that is the problem (see the thing above about "hacks")

A BSOD is never normal - if it doesn't happen when you leave it alone, then that's a clue for us to look at as the troubleshooting develops.

FYI - there are 3 things that cause BSOD's:
- 3rd party (non-Windows) drivers (more than 90% of BSOD's)
- hardware problems (less than 10% of BSOD's)
- Windows drivers (less than 1% of BSOD's)

I work my way through the 3rd party drivers before assuming a hardware problem - as some 3rd party drivers can act as if they are hardware.

Hi, I have a copy of windows 7 just needs putting to disk. Its legitimate again on student licence. I've only used the serial on a virtual machine in vmware, would this serial still be good for a "real" install?

I am currently working through the driver list.

The drive fails the short drive self test on both seaTools and Data Lifeguard, The hp support assistant displays the smart status as good, as does seatools.

Thank you for your help.

The license should still be good if you install it. Worst case you have to call Microsoft for activation - and tell them that it's only installed once (that the VM copy was deleted).

Run the long test for both the Seagate and Western Digital tests. The short test is accurate in most cases, but the long test is the definitive test for a failing hard drive.

If still having BSOD's, please zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post.

Hi I ran the extended test on western digital but it did not finish as my laptop crashed. Are there any programs that can run these tests on startup?

I decided to run the short and long hard drive tests in bios and it came back as passed.

IMO it's most likely a bad hard drive - but it could also be a problem with other components (but that's much less likely).
The next "test" is to replace the hard drive with a known good hard drive and see if that stops the problem.

If you don't have a spare hard drive on hand, I'd purchase one from a place that will let you return it for a refund (most major retailers will do this). Then install Windows on the new hard drive and see what happens.

Just FYI - don't activate Windows just yet. Wait to see if the new hard drive stops the problems. If it does, you can then go and activate Windows on the new hard drive.
