DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error when closing laptop lid

    Hello,

I have recently been experiencing problems with my laptop. When I close the laptop lid to send it to sleep, the fan will whir loudly after a few minutes, before the computer shuts down completely. When I turn the computer on again, an error message pops up informing me that the computer had to restart because of a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE error (0x0000009f). I opened a thread a month ago about the same issue. It seemed as though my power settings were wrong, and the problem was seemingly resolved when I reset the power settings. I haven't changed the settings since then. Attempting to replicate the BSOD in safe mode was unsuccessful; closing the laptop lid posed no problems with resuming.

As per the instructions, I have attached the necessary files. Thank you!

    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions). You may have removed this already - it doesn't show in the last memory dump.
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [S] DuplexSecure - FAQ [/S] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012
New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
    Alternate link: Disc-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help
Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thank you for replying. I uninstalled daemon-tools and sptd.sys (using the uninstaller on the DuplexSecure website) a day or two ago. As for Alcohol % software, I attempted to install a trial version of Alcohol 120% a month or two ago; I let it install, but upon rebooting my computer as per the installer's request, the second half of the installation process did not show up. I relented, and decided not to attempt installation again. There doesn't seem to be any indication that the program was installed, but I thought I'd mention the incident anyway.

I can't seem to find the drivers for sabi.sys and sgdrv64.sys. I'll go ahead and uninstall the SecureGuard device from the Device Manager, but I'm not sure how to go about removing sabi.sys.

Do the best that you are able with the uninstallers.
We'll see if they're still there on the next BSOD (if it's not fixed by then).

It may not have been the best idea, but I backed up my files and re-installed Windows. SABI.sys and SGdrv64.sys are no longer on the system. SABI.sys seems to have been related to the Samsung Easy Display Software, which I did not have on my computer, and the origins of SGdrv64.sys remain a mystery. It's entirely possible that those two drivers were the culprits of the BSOD, but I can't say for sure.

Upon further examination, however, the BSOD problem seems to have been related to the Samsung Battery Life Extender software. After installing the latest version of Samsung Settings, the computer started to crash again. Out of a possible three culprits (ExpressCache, USB Sleep Charging and Battery Life Extender), turning only the Battery Life Extender on caused a BSOD on sleep. With that, I turned off the Extender, and even with the other two functions on, there hasn't been another BSOD since.

EDIT: Scratch that. The Battery Life Extender function is OK; the USB Sleep Charging function was the culprit. With that function off, the computer goes to sleep just fine.

Thanks for letting us know what you found! It'll help others who come looking for help with the same type of problem.

Although I haven't seen the USB sleep issues with Samsung systems - I have seen problems with it in Asus, Gigabyte, and AsRock systems.

I'd have to wonder if a combination of the Battery Life Extender and the USB Sleep Charger are an issue. Should the BSOD's return, try uninstalling both of them.

    Good luck!

A final update: I left the Battery Life Extender on and another BSOD occurred. Turned both the USB Charger and the Extender off, and everything seems to be fine now. It seems like your hunch was right.

Thank you for all your help!

EDIT: Unplugging my keyboard/mouse USB receiver from its USB port lets the computer sleep, even with the USB Charger and Extender functions on

I know I said I figured it out, but I actually hadn't! I just thought I'd post this for future reference. The real culprit was Logitech's Setpoint software. It seems that, with the USB Charging on, Setpoint wouldn't let the computer go to sleep. Uninstalling Setpoint stopped all BSOD's, even with the Samsung functions turned on. Hopefully this helps other people in the future.
