BSoD crash

Sorry for the delay in responding, I've been babysitting my 10 day old grandson - and I don't get much free time to be online!

Please be sure to get all Windows Updates AND all Apple Software updates.

Your VMWare USB driver dates from 2009 - please update the entire VMWare installation to the latest, Win8 compatible version.

Please update this driver - it's pointed at as the cause in the debugger:
nvhda64v.sys Mon Feb 25 00:27:35 2013 (512AF647)
nVidia HDMI Audio Device (nForce chipset driver)
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=nvhda64v.sys

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hi

All Windows updates and all Apple Software Updates are installed. Regarding VMware, I have Workstation 9.0.2 installed which is the latest version. With regards to NVIDIA, I have version 320.18 of the drivers installed.

I am getting a BSOD whenever I resume after hibernation or shutdown. Restart and sleep don't give problems.

What do I do?

Please note the dates on the drivers listed in RED. They are all from well-before Windows 8 came out. This means that they may not be Win8 compatible.

These are mostly Apple drivers - so the source for them would be Apple. Beyond that I can't be of much help as I don't own a MacBook/iMac system.

All of them are from Bootcamp 5, Apple's drivers for Windows (the latest one).

I spent an hour downloading the latest update from Apple (which took me a while to find). It was BootCamp 5.0.5033
Then I spent another hour combing through the drivers until I was able to extract one (actually 2) that matched those in RED above.

Here's the two I found:
appleMTP.sys 6/17/2011 18:12
appleMTM.sys 6/17/2011 18:12

And here's the two from above:
applemtp.sys Tue Sep 22 18:18:06 2009 (4AB94D1E)

applemtm.sys Wed Dec 22 22:01:31 2010 (4D12BB8B)

Please note that both drivers are newer than the drivers that you state are the latest ones.

Well, I reinstalled Boot Camp 5.0.5033 (the same thing I installed previously). Here's what I found in C:\System32\Drivers for those 2 drivers:

applemtm.sys 18-Jun-11 06:42 AM
applemtp.sys 18-Nov-09 09:15 PM

Additionally, I have uninstalled VMware. I had VMware Workstation 9.0.2 installed (the latest according to the site).

Sleep performance is still spotty and sometimes it doesn't go to sleep. Any troubleshooting tips?

The applemtp.sys from 2009 still concerns me - but I haven't had a Boot Camp system at work in order to check.
The tech who's a Mac expert at work is also of the opinion that there are more recent Apple drivers.
This is where I got the link with the later drivers: Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033

Sleep issues are primarily due to chipset, storage, and video drivers. Some Intel programs will also affect it (such as the Management Engine, etc).

And, just a hunch on my part, there's an awful lot of Kaspersky drivers in the memory dumps. Although this may be normal, I'd suggest:
- uninstalling Kaspersky
- use Action Center to ensure that Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall is enabled
- test for further BSOD's/sleep issues

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

I don't know if the above reports will help, but they may clue us in on what's happening around the time of the sleep transitions.

Find out what about VMWare?

In the uploaded file I see .NET issues, MySQL issues, and issues with Kaspersky.
Such a wide range of errors is possibly indicative of a malware infection - or of damage done by and infection before it was removed.

Have you scanned for malware? Has this installation been infected?

So do I do a full scan now? Or what options do I have? It hardly goes to sleep these days.

I have seen BSOD issues with Connectify3
I have seen BSOD issues with Kaspersky - mostly the Internet Security versions
I suspect issues w/VMWare - but have no concrete proof of it.

I use KIS 2013. Which is a good antivirus?

How can I make a wireless hotspot without using Connectify?

And, I have narrowed down that BSoD to NVIDIA HD Audio driver. Forums on Anandtech and other sites are complaining about it.

I use Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall.

I have no experience with wireless hotspots.

I'm glad that you found the nVidia HD Audio driver to be at fault. Thanks for letting us know!

Is Windows Defender good enough? It doesn't even scan a removable drive when inserted. And that bothers me as I routinely encounter viruses in pen drives.

I advise that the best and cheapest anti-virus is a bag of cement.
Encase your computer in it and then drop it into deep water - no more viruses!

But seriously, I have had 3 virus' on my systems since I started working with computers.
1 actually infected my computer and the others that borrowed files from me (this was in 1991 and we didn't even have anti-virus)
The other 2 were downloaded to my system and never got exectuted - so I didn't get infected. They were found by a routine scan back when I was using AdAware.

Yet every day at work I see people with all sorts of protection - and they all have problems with virus'
What's the problem? It's simple - it's the surfing habits of the user.

At one point I was curious why my kids got infected and I didn't. So I asked them. They said that when they got a pop-up (this was about 7 years ago) they'd click on it just to get rid of it.

The point here is that it's your surfing habits that protect you. The antivirus program (in my case) simply serves as a backup in case something gets past my habits.

FWIW - I have several tech friends who don't even use antivirus' They maintain backup copies of their data (and images of their hard drives) - so when/if they get infected, they simply wipe and start over.

You can discuss the relative merits of one antivirus over the other - but the most significant factor is the surfing habits of the user.

Also, the more complicated a program that works at the low level of an antivirus - the more likely it is to have problems. We experience many more BSOD issues due to Internet Security/Security Center apps than we do with Antivirus applications.

The same thing goes for firewalls - many more BSOD's with 3rd party firewalls than with the Windows firewall - with no discernable impact on safety that I have seen.
