Kernal-Power 41-63 Forced Reboots

Problem: Win 8 machine has forced reboots every 20 min while left unattended and a few time while attended. The problem first arose after trying to install a scanner driver for an older dell black laser printer/scanner/fax. Never got the scanner working, but now the PC keeps rebooting and interrupting work. Please see attached .zip for more info.

PS: This is on my father's PC that I can only reach via Chrome Remote Desktop

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8
Also disable Fast Boot/Hybrid Sleep also (in powercfg.cpl..."Choose what the power button does")

Event ID 41 is Windows saying "WTF" It's merely a record that Windows doesn't know why it restarted (actually it's the WER system that doesn't know).

Please rerun the report collecting app - it didn't get all of the reports. Let it run for at least 15 minutes (or until the app itself says that it's done). Then zip it up and upload it with your next post.

Please check in Device Manager (this is a hunch on my part). We're looking for a device that has problems and is named something similar to "USBXHCI". If you find that, right click on it and select "Uninstall" - then reboot the system and see if it comes back with problems (or not). Let us know the results of this please.

This driver sure isn't helping things:
SSPORT.sys Thu Aug 11 19:07:32 2005 (42FBDA34)
Dating from 2005, it's probably not Win8 compatible. Please ensure that you have uninstalled the software for the Dell printer (that's probably what the driver belongs to). Then check to ensure it's removed (DO NOT delete it!!!). If it isn't gone then - I'll provide other instructions to safely remove it.

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [DEL] DuplexSecure - FAQ [/DEL] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012
New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disc-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks for the reply. USBXHCI.SYS seems to point to a conflict with the USB 3.0 hardware. Also, SSPORT.sys is a Samsung driver for my cell phone which is plugged into the front USB 3.0 port. I'll try using the back USB 2.0 ports instead for this device. Eben tough theoretically 3.0/2.0 should not have a conflict.

I'll remove CLVirtualDrive.sys because I don't need it, and I think sptd.sys works with that as well because it is daemon tools. Both these point to CyberLink Virtual drive?

The USBXHCI.sys driver has been a PITA for me since I first saw problems with it on Toshiban and Samsung laptops at work. Uninstall it and reboot to see if it's properly installed.

As for the SSPORT.sys driver - it doesn't matter what it's from (I usually see it associated with printers) - it dates from 2005. Win8 wasn't even a gleam in Ballmer's eye at that time. Uninstall the program please.

sptd.sys is a component of Daemon Tools/Alcohol % software that is known to cause BSOD's. It is NOT a part of Cyberlink software and removing it won't remove the sptd.sys driver. After uninstalling Daemon Tools you must use the special tool to remove sptd.sys.
