    BSOD on DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (9f)

    Hey guys.

After about 2 solid days of scouring the web for solutions to this, nothing I've done has worked. I know it has to be a driver issue, and I suspect there's something that wasn't uninstalled properly (or hasn't been updated, but I can't find new updates)

Here's the debug output, which hasn't been very informative:

I've seen numerous solutions in these forums, but they seem too user-specific to work for my situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nice job with the debugger! Unfortunately, sometimes these errors can get a bit nasty to troubleshoot.

Make sure that you have ALL Windows Updates (skip the Bing Desktop if you don't have it installed already). Make several visits in order to be sure.

You have 4 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
    1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
    2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.
If using Corsair Link2 software, please uninstall it - it's a known cause of BSOD's on some Windows systems

Please uninstall Gigabyte ET6 (EasyTune6) as it is known to cause BSOD's. Also, if installed, please uninstall EasySaver for the same reason.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

    The PSU is a 3 year old Corsair 650W CORSAIR TX Series CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Power Supply - Newegg.com

FYI one of the hard drives is an external USB drive.

Only available updates are for Silverlight and Bing Desktop.

Looking through the driver list, the ASUS ones are from a previous motherboard, but I had already uninstalled any software I could find, both by using Programs and Features, and by trawling through Program Files and looking for uninstall executables. Is there a way to actually remove the drivers, if no "parent" program is found?

In-line update: I hit the first realtek driver, and while rebooting as required, the system did not BSOD! Maybe that was a holdover from my old motherboard as well, and the updated driver is working? I'll go through the rest of the links as I can.

Also, since you recommend uninstalling EasyTune and the CorsairLink utilities, can you recommend any replacements? EasyTune is used for overclocking and performance tweaking, which came with the motherboard, and the Corsair utility is for a water-cooling unit that allows customization of fan speeds.

Thanks so much for your help!

    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!

I was an avid overclocker for years - then I finally decided that the incremental increases weren't worth the shortened lifespan/hardware problems that overclocking results in.

As such, I can't recommend anything specific. I'd post over in the hardware forums for suggestions from the experts: Drivers & Hardware - Windows 8 Forums
But, here's hoping that the network driver update has solve the problems for you.

Short explanation for a very long and complicated topic:
Some programs aren't as stable as others.
I get to see a lot of BSOD scenarios - but not many non-BSOD scenarios (except for at work)
So, what I see are the common causes - but that doesn't mean that they cause ir for everyone.

For example, a known BSOD cause is the 2005 version of ASACPI.sys on Win7/8 systems.
I have seen this many, many times.
Yet on my own system I have had this driver for 3 years w/Win7 - and since June 2012 with Win8 (just updated it about a week ago) - and haven't had any problems with it.

Yeah, from what I'm gathering, its either one isolated problem, or the random mix of various drivers from all different sources and times. Definitely hard to figure out, so props to you for being able to sift through everything!

A side question about storage controllers: as part of my research for this issue, I'd read that a lot of people have issues with Marvell controllers and SSDs, and choose to use the native Windows drivers instead of the manufacturer's. Any thoughts one way or the other?

    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!

When we first started spotting troubles with Marvell controllers and SSD's, it was because Marvell hadn't released a controller update since sometime in early/mid 2011 - and SSD's weren't very common back then. But recently Marvell has released some newer controller drivers and I don't see as many problems as I used to with them.

Just FYI - here's my old SSD canned speech with lot's of Marvell comments in it. I stopped using it not long ago because the problems seem to have gone away:
We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:
There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

    Here's some suggestions:
    - Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
    - Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard! I STRONGLY suggest not using controller drivers older than mid-2012 with SSD's.
    - Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
    - Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
    - Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
06 Dec 2011 - This post tends to confirm issues with certain SSD chipsets and certain controllers - [SOLVED] cant find the cause of BSOD F4 - Tech Support Forum
05 Jan 2013 - very interesting post about difficulties with the Marvell controllers even when not connected to the SSD drives: https://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cras...ing-sleep.html
27 Feb 2013 - I'm starting to see much better reliability with SSD's using current (mid-2012 and later) storage drivers. I have withdrawn my objections to using these devices in everyday systems.

Haha, I think I specifically came across one of those responses in my searching.

After a couple more reboots and updates/removals of drivers, everything seems to be stable, though I'm knocking on all available wood within reach. I'll update this thread if anything else shows up, but for now I'll mark it as solved.

Thanks again for your assistance and information.
