Solved Windows Services Very Strange Problem

Let me start off by saying that all my services are working fine.

However, all the Windows services show this in the 'Description' column "Failed to read description. Error code: 2".

Also when I click into any of my hard disks 'Properties' dialogue box I cannot run the disk error check. When clicking on the 'Check' button nothing happens. I can run 'chkdsk' from an elevated command prompt.

However, I cannot run 'sfc /scannow', I get the error "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service". I ran 'sfc /scannow' at boot. It works fine there, but did not find any problems.

I do not know how long this has been going on, as I reloaded my last 3 image backups, still the same.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

For starters:
At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis (even though you're not reporting BSOD's - the reports will help us): http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

Your BIOS dates from 2009. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

You're getting this error once a day:

There are enough signs here that that I have to wonder about this installation. Should this be a pirated copy of Windows, please be aware that we may not be able to fix it (as the hacks that were done to activate it will cause the OS to behave differently than we expect it to). If that's the case, our efforts to help may just waste your time. Secondly, the forum rules prohibit assisting with pirated software - so the topic would be closed if that is the case.

I suspect that the problem is caused either by malware, or by problems with pirated software.
Beyond that, all I can think of is to try to wipe the hard drive and "clean" install Windows:
Backup, Wipe, and "Clean Install" of Windows
For testing purposes, it's best to install Windows "clean".
This is, basically, installing it the way that Microsoft intended (using drivers from Windows Update).
This procedure is for Windows 7 and Vista.

You will need your installation/recovery DVD(s) before you start. Once you wipe the hard drive there's no going back!!!

1. Backup all your data.
This will wipe everything off of your hard drive, so anything that you want to keep will need to be saved elsewhere.

NOTE: If this is due to an infection, remember to scan the data with another system's current antivirus in order to locate and remove any malware.
NOTE: Disconnect any additional hard drives (internal and external) that you may have installed. This may break any multi-boot setups that you have, so be prepared to conduct recovery operations on them once you're done. Don't forget that, if this is due to an infection, the additional hard drives may be infected also.

2. Connect the system to the internet (if the system says disconnect from the Internet, then do so).

2½. Make sure that you've run hardware diagnostics on the system, as installing Windows on "borked" hardware isn't a real good idea.
Free diagnostics here: Hardware Diagnostics
At a minimum, you must have run these bootable diagnostics (they work outside of Windows, so Windows doesn't have to be working): Initial Hardware Diagnostics

3. Use one of these free utilities to wipe the hard drive clean:
KillDisk ( Freeware Download Active@ KillDisk ).
DBAN ( DBAN Download | Darik's Boot And Nuke )
This will also delete any recovery partitions on the system - so the installation/recovery DVD's are essential!!!

4. Install Windows by booting from the installation/recovery DVD - DO NOT tweak any settings!!!

5. Visit Windows Update and get all updates

6. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)

7. Not needed for Windows 8 (it was Service Pack install for Vista/7)

8. Visit Windows Update and get all available updates

9. Download, install, and update a free antivirus so you don't get infected while testing ( Free AntiVirus ).

10. Test to see if the problem remains.
If the problems persist, then the problem is most likely with your hardware.
If the problems are gone, then proceed with installing the latest version of your favorite programs, testing after each one for errors.

CAVEAT: If you have an Asus motherboard, check the date on the C:\Windows\System32\driver\ASACPI.sys file. 2004/2005 is a problem, 2009/2010 is OK. Updates are available at the Asus support website.

CAVEAT: If you have a Sony system, make sure that you DO NOT have the 2007 (or earlier) version of the Sony Firmware Extension Parser (SFEP.sys). Update this driver immediately!!!

John,

Thank you so much for your help - you helped find the problem.

Let me first assure you that I am running a certified MS copy of Windows 8, bought and paid for through Windows Store.

My BIOS is up to date.

However, you helped me solve the problem with the pirated software. This was something my friend put on the PC for me some time ago, and after a few days I found I did not want it so uninstalled it. When you pointed it out to me in your last message, I searched my PC for it and could find no trace.

I therefore searched out the date my friend installed the software (it was in my calendar!). I then went on a search on an external hard drive and found an image from 5 days before he installed this pirate stuff. I therefore managed to roll back to the image I found, and everything is now fine again, all problems have gone.

I will tell my friend he can keep his software to himself in future!

Thank you so much for all your time and effort.

More BSOD's are solved by the owners of the computer than any other method.
I just provide clues that will, hopefully, point you in the right direction to find the fix!

Good luck to you and thanks for letting us know what the fix was!
