BSOD on Win8 install at configuring devices stage

Hello,

I'm trying to help my dad fix his desktop PC on the other side of the world via Skype  Basically, he's installed Windows 8 (as a clean install) from the upgrade DVD however when Windows 8 boots and gets to "configuring devices" with about 69% progress and then BSOD and a crash dump. Does anyone know how I retrieve the crash dump file output even though Windows itself won't start? I want to see if there's a dodgy device somewhere causing errors. He did get occasional BSOD in Win7 so it sounds like it could be the same thing. The installation is fine up until that point.

I'm going to get my dad to try starting without any USB devices plugged in.

Thanks, LP.

Try using a bootable disk - such as a Live Linux distribution or the Ultimate Boot CD.
That should allow you to access the file system on the hard drive.

If there are memory dumps, you should be able to find them in C:\Windows (MEMORY.dmp) or in C:\Windows\Minidump.

But also, there'll be several installation log files that may contain info on why the installation is failing:
Understanding Failures and Log Files
Windows Setup Log Files and Event Log

You might also have him try these free, bootable diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
