BSOD and Crashing

I'm hoping someone here can read into the event logs and work out what is happening with my computer.

Majority of the time the computer doesn't shut-down properly, will just reboot and load into windows asking about sending some information to Microsoft.

What has started happening last day or two I'm receiving artifacts in Bioshock Infinite, then it crashed with a Red screen of death.

I initially thought it was the GPU, however this is my 3rd GPU. Now I'm thinking it's perhaps the RAM. I've run memory diagnostic with no errors.

Any advice is sincerely welcome.

Only 61 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 66 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

We have seen problems with Killer NIC cards in Win8. As they're not widely used, it's difficult to figure out what's to blame (hardware or drivers). I suggest first updating the drivers to the latest, Win8 compatible version. If that doesn't stop the BSOD's, then I suggest trying another network card.

C: drive only has about 10% free space. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

One of the 3 memory dumps blames your ATI video drivers (the other 2 are inconclusive). Because of the small number of 3rd party drivers in the memory dump - I tend to wonder if this might be a hardware problem.

I suggest using this procedure to install the DRIVERS ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the BSOD's continue after that, then I'd suggest the free video tests here: Additional Hardware Diagnostics
Keep an eye out for updated drivers from ATI - as this is the 2nd one of these that I've seen this week (and I've only seen one or two over the last year or two).

Thank-you very much for your reply usasma.

As you have suggested I've updated Windows with all possible updates.

Updated Network Card to latest Beta driver and uninstalled entire ATI suite and have just re-installed the latest Beta driver.

I've confirmed I have the latest SSD firmware.

Also I've freed space to roughly 30% on primary drive.

However how do I check what storage controller I have or should install? I just don't wish to install unnecessary drivers.

I will monitor the system and report thus far...

To figure out the storage controllers, you look for ALL storage controller drivers on the system.
To do this we must know the exact make and model of the system/motherboard.
From there we research the specifications of the system and see what storage controllers are listed.
CAUTION: In some OEM systems the system image may include storage drivers for controllers that aren't present on the system. I'm unsure of the impact of these on SSD's - so I suggest updating them also "just in case".

The most common storage controller is the Intel RST - and your's dates from 2011, so it needs updating.
The best place for the Intel updates are http://downloadcenter.intel.com Start with the RAID RST (Rapid Storage Technology) drivers, then try the AHCI version. DO NOT try the Enterprise!!!

Memory dumps blame video drivers - now you're having video issues (the red line). Tends to reinforce the thought that it's a problem with the video sub-system.

If you haven't updated the video drivers, please do so now using this link: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums
If you have updated the video drivers, then try the video diagnostics at this link: Additional Hardware Diagnostics

Let's go with the 2 drivers listed on the Downloads section of the Gigabyte page for your mobo.
The driver dates from Nov of 2012 - and the hotfix will also help to update problem areas ( GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - G1.Sniper M3 (rev. 1.0) ) I'm referring to the first 2 items in the SATA RAID/AHCI section - the Intel driver and the hotfix.

Video sub-system is a term that refers to all the stuff associated with video processing. It's sorta vague, but better than trying to name all the components (both hardware and software) that are involved in the error.

In this case I meant it to refer to the need to consider both the video drivers (which is the first step in troubleshooting this error) and the hardware (which is the second step in troubleshooting this error). There are many, many other things that could be a problem - but these are the most common in this type of situation.

Did you install the video drivers using the DRIVER ONLY link that I provided? If not, please do so - as just plain updating will leave other ATI programs on the system which can cause video problems. In the past I have seen problems with the Catalyst Control Center, AMD Overdrive, and a couple of other features.

The Intel Driver is now installed. The hotfix unfortunately couldn't be installed, as it would stop during extraction with an error saying 'not applicable to my system.'

Yes, I followed your link to installing the ATI driver to the tee. Only the driver was updated nothing else installed.

One great improvement thus far is that the computer has not even once stuffed up during shut-down. Every-time is has properly shut-down.

Though I am seeing more and more artifacts in Bioshock. Perhaps a comprehensive test with Furmark is in order...

So, we presume that the ATI drivers and software have been proven not to be at fault.
Then next comes the video stress tests. There's several listed on this page, try them all: Additional Hardware Diagnostics

Oh boy I wish this was the end of it.

A new problem has appeared since installing the Intel drivers.

I press any key to resume from sleep. The computer comes to life, however the monitor doesn't turn back on.

Only a reset of the computer brings back the monitor to life...

Any ideas?

Not unusual - especially as it's a video problem.

I still suspect the RST driver - so give the Intel version a try (the one that you linked to earlier)
If it doesn't work, then post back and we'll try to track down the AHCI version.

When you first visit the Intel Download Center it offers to do a scan of your computer.
Try doing that to see if it'll give you any later updates (of any Intel components).

In the past (XP days) hibernation problems were caused by video drivers.
Now (Vista/7/8) hibernation problems can also be caused by chipset, video, storage, LAN/WLAN, and other drivers

Okay Done. RST 12.6 now installed.

I've just run Furmark at 1920x1080 (0x MSAA) for 15 minutes.
Max Temp: 78c @ 44% fan speed.

Didn't encounter any problems there. I will move onto the next 3 benchmarks time permitting.

What I have noticed with Bioshock Infinite, is that artifacts usually wouldn't appear/happen till 2-3 hours of gameplay.

I will monitor and report back!

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Hopefully it'll give us a clue as to what's happening here.

I see multiple failures in the activation of a Volume License

Should this be a pirated copy of Windows, it's possible that the crack/hack used to pirate the copy may be responsible for these problems. If that is the case, we may just be wasting your time here. Also, if the OS is pirated, it's against the forum rules and the topic would be closed.

In the event that the system is legitimate, please contact your IT department/Microsoft for assistance in activating your Volume License. If the problem continues after the license is properly activated, please post back for further assistance.

It's certainly a legitimate version of Windows 8. There's no doubt about that.

I've got the installation disc and cover that it comes in. Purchased from local PC store.

And it shows as being activated in Windows....

Not sure what it could be trying to activate.

You recommend contacting Microsoft?

I also ran HCI Memory Test - 5 windows for roughly 6 hours. They each did about 300-400 hrs courage and didn't find any problems with memory.

I'd first post over in our Updates/Activation forum: Windows Updates & Activation - Windows 8 Forums

Warning 5/25/2013 06:51:27 Security-SPP 8233 None
The rules engine reported a failed VL activation attempt.

FWIW - the same error also seems to appear for Volume Licenses for Office. Do you have a volume license for Office?
Still, it's an error that I don't know anything about - and it's the only thing that I see that appears significant.

If the folks over in the Updates/Activation forum can't help - then I'd suggest trying Microsoft.
If Microsoft wants money for this - then I'd suggest wiping the computer and reinstalling Windows (to avoid paying the fee if it's too expensive). That way you can see if a fresh install fixes the problem - if it doesn't, you can always check back with Microsoft.

Good luck!
