I just got a Windows 8 BSOD talking about a watchdog failing or something, after that the windows restarted and said "Updaing" on startup, since when does Windows update on startup?

Watchdogs are processes designed to monitor the system and kill any process that is not operating properly. I didn't even know Windows had one, so it must be a new (and buggy) feature. And I imagine you're computer was set to download updates in the background.

Unrelated to your bsod. You can post for help if you wish.
