Custom Built computer random BSOD's

Hello,

I am running Windows 8 64 bit Professional. Occasionally, I'll get seemingly random BSOD's when trying to game or watch a video on Youtube. The error that shows is a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE.

The computer also sometimes hangs on restart, then BSOD's with a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE.

This is a custom built desktop. This is extremely annoying. Thanks in advance for the help.

NOTE: If using a disk cleaning utility, please stop using it while we are troubleshooting your issues.
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service. Then post the link to it in your topic so that we can download it.

Also, search your entire hard drive for files ending in .dmp, .mdmp, and .hdmp. Zip up any that you find and upload them with your next post.

Only 57 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 66 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

You have a D-Link Wireless N USB Adapter DWA-130:
I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win7/Win8 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7(and I suspect with Win8) - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7/Win8 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is all controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

For the first device, right click on it and select "Uninstall". Reboot the system to see if it's detected properly. If not, post back

The second device is the Intel(R) Smart Connect Technology Device - please download and install the latest, Win8 compatible drivers for it. If not available at the PC manufacturer's site, you can check at http://downloadcenter.intel.com

Although there are no memory dumps uploaded, I did manage to find 2 BSOD's in the WER section of MSINFO32.
They are both STOP 0x139 errors ( KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE ) and both blame MRVW24C.sys (a driver component of your Wireless USB Network Adapter - Marvell TOPDOG 802.11n WLAN Driver for Vista x64 (USB8x)). Since this driver dates from 2007, it's most likely to be your problem.

Please remove the software for this device, then physically remove the device from the system in order to test. Either use a very long cord, or a wireless card that plugs directly into your motherboard (NOT USB) in order to get Internet while testing.

I am unable to access the Minidump folder. It won't let me open it (even though I request access) and I can't copy it to the desktop (even though it says it copied it).


I just installed all of the updates currently available. I ran the update check a couple times after as well. Now it says I have 63 updates.


I uninstalled the Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter and rebooted but it still had a yellow exclamation on it. I tried updating the drivers for it by right clicking it, then it failed. I then tried uninstalling it again and it disappeared. I just also installed the latest Windows 8 drivers for the Intel Smart Connect Technology Device.

I just removed the Dlink wireless adapter drivers also.

As for the Dlink, I was using the USB adapter because the wifi adapter on my motherboard went out. I will buy a wifi card that plugs into the motherboard. Any suggestions on a brand that works well with Windows 8?

No suggestions other than sticking with a major brand.

I'd suggest using a bootable disk such as the Ultimate Boot CD or a Live Linux distro to see if you can access the Minidump folder outside of Windows. I'd also suggest a couple of the free scans from here - just in case something got past your current protection: Free Online AntiMalware Resources

Ok, thanks for the help usasma.

I scanned with some of the scanners and nothing was found.

I also found out that the minidump folder itself is empty, by mousing over it. My settings were set to Automatic Memory Dump, but I haven't had another crash since I used the USB wifi adapter. Do I need to keep it on Small Memory Dump just in case it crashes again?

I did find these .dmp files though, and I zipped them up and added them to the post.

Yes, keep it on Small Memory Dumps just in case.

The latest memory dump blames video drivers - the rest are related to the USB issues discussed earlier. Drivers date from 2007, so they are (IMO) likely to be the cause of those errors.

To troubleshoot the video issues, please follow the steps here: Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

You stated that the WIFI on your motherboard went out, is it a card or built in?
If its built in and its failing then your MOBO may be defective or your MOBO drivers are bad.
Sometimes hardware driver CDs come corrupt or incorrect, download your MOBO drivers from the manufacturer and reinstall them.
Uninstall current ones instead of update, the old ones must be removed..

The wifi is built into the motherboard. I thought it had gone out previously, as I was getting huge lag spikes during gaming, and then suddenly it wouldn't even work at all. I initially thought it was something with the router, but troubleshooted it and that wasn't the case.

So then I resorted to the USB wifi adapter, which worked fine for the most part. Until I found out that it was the cause of the crashes. Then I stopped using it.

I am currently using the built-in wifi (works ok, but still has the same lag spikes) to use the internet. I have the most current drivers from the website. This all won't matter in about a month, because I will be moving to another place where I can plug directly in the router.

I would send the motherboard in, but I had already sent it in once, which took a month to get repaired and sent back to me. I can't go that long without a computer again. The computer works fine, it's just small things that are annoying.
