Frequent BSOD on new PC upgraded to Windows 8 Pro

I have a brand new PC been using for last few days; which I just upgraded to a new SSD drive and a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro; manually installed all the drivers myself, and have been getting quite frequent daily BSOD crashes.

Im really not familiar with Windows 8, so have been a struggle to even find out how to find the log files of the crashes. Some of the crashes have happened when I've been away from computer so was not able to see the 'error code' that appears on the BSOD.
But twice I have seen it were different errors; one was "KMODE_EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED", and the most recent was "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (storport.sys).

I have followed the sticky post on using the SF Diagnostic Tool to retrieve the logs, and hope someone can guide me to find the specific problem of this; whether it is hardware problem or driver's.

More info on my pc if it helps:

Hi, first try this, open command prompt and type "sfc/sacnnow"

Have used the sfc/scannow; and said it fixed an error, but still have been receiving BSOD.

I did a hardware test, and found that my SSD failed the SMART self test.
Also; a strange problem is that when I look at properties of the hard drives; the names are jumbled up (eg. PLEXTOR is LPXEOT), but appear fine when in startup BIOS.

What test did you run? AFAIK, Plextor doesn't offer any diagnostics for this product - so testing will have to be done with another drive to see if the problem persists. If this is your OS drive, there's no need to activate the Windows installation on the test drive. Should you need to activate, you have 30 days before it expires - so take your time and test it.

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is all controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

Only 54 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 66 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

There is this problem device in Device Manager:
WAN Miniport (Network Monitor) #2 ROOT\MS_NDISWANBH\0001 This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.
Right click on the device and select "Uninstall". Reboot and see if it comes back - if it does, let us know.

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [DEL] DuplexSecure - FAQ [/DEL] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012
New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).

Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

All of the BSOD's point to your Intel Storage drivers. Please update these to the latest, Win8 compatible version available from the Alienware website.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks so much for the detailed response.
However, due to the amount of problems; I decided to reformat and reinstall windows on the SSD again since I did not have any important files on that hard drive.
The names of the drives are now labelled correctly; and someone else on Plextor forum has pointed out that Daemon Tools could have caused the problem so I made sure not to install that.

Also, from another forum I ran into people who has said that the Intel RST have been known to cause BSOD's.

A strange thing is when I did a clean reinstall windows (deleted all partitions on the SSD) and started to windows for first time, after few minutes the screen flickered and appeared that the graphics card drivers were automatically installed. Audio drivers, Intel RST, also seemed to have appear even though I did not manually install them (which I did the first time I reformatted) and was before I did Windows Update. Are these drivers already included in the Windows 8 install?
The only driver I installed from the given Dell/Alienware download page was the Chipset Driver as it appeared to not have been found in Device Manager.
So far 12 hours of usage, I have not encountered a BSOD and hopefully would stay that way.

Glad to hear that you've fixed it!
I'd suggest staying away from Daemon Tools also.
Good luck!
