Numerous BSOD's

I repeatedly get random BSOD's. Sometimes they occur when I'm not using the computer and can happen several times in one day. Some days I don't get any. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason as to when or why they occur. I posted a couple of weeks ago but haven't heard anything back in almost a week and am hoping to get guidance as to any other steps I can take. I believe I've updated all of the old drivers & old BIOS. I don't think I installed any Roxio products when I upgraded to Win 8. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Your BIOS dates from 2008. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

Code 32 is "Disabled" - have you disabled your processor in Device Manager? If so, why?:

If not we'll have to take a serious look to see if your system is compatible with Win8.

BSOD's seem to be centered on the storage sub-system (bad hard drive, BIOS, or controllers).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I did not disable the processor and do not know why it is disabled. They were not disabled last week when I began updating drivers. I've had Win 8 since shortly after the public release and this is the 1st time I've seen that. I'm in the process of doing the hard drive diagnostic and will post my results when I'm done.

The Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant is in the process. When I took a closer look at the drivers for the disabled processors, I recognized the value intelppm. In a previous threat where I asked for help, I was instructed to follow the below steps. That may have disabled the processors.

your dump files still indicated intelppm.sys was the cause for BSOD. If you use notepad and look in EventApp.txt and dxdiag.txt and search for "intelppm", you'll see the error message causing Blue Screen.

I suggest you try to turn off this service to see if it stops BSODing:

  1. Win+X->Run and type Regedit
  2. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Intelppm
  3. In the right pane, right-click the Start entry, and then right click Modify
  4. In the Value data box, type 4, and then click OK. Close Registry Editor
  5. Restart your PC

Well I've tried updating the drivers, but I've had 4 BSOD's in the last hour. I updated to the latest Broadcomm driver, but it was not compatible and disabled the device. I had to roll back to the old one just to get back on to the internet. I've updated to the Creative Software with a download from last month, but the drivers still indicate they're old. The recurring problem I see is an error with nvstor.sys. I have updated the graphics card driver, but for some reason I'm still getting issues with nvstor.sys. If there's anything else I can try, I'd be more than happy to. My computer worked fine when I first upgraded to Win 8, but these problems have crippled my computer and I have no idea what prompted them. I don't use it very often and can't think of what started the problems.

Last thing for now. I went through all of my devices and determined nvstor.sys appears to be the driver for my motherboard, which is a NVidia 680i SLI. I have driver version 10.6.0.22 dated 9-12-11. When I go to the NVidia website to try to update the driver, it indicates the most recent driver is 15.58 with a date of 5-2-11. I was hesitant to update the driver out of fear of locking up my computer. Any suggestions?

What is the value for intelppm in the Start key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm ?

I would suggest changing the Start key to 3 (that's what it is on my system) in both ControlSet001 and CurrentControlSet - but only after taking these steps to ensure that you can get back into the system if it crashes because of this change:

1) Create a Restore Point using System Restore
2) Create a Repair disc:
Win8 - Press "WIN" and "R" to open the Run dialog...type "RECDISC" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
3) Test the System Repair disc to make sure that you can get to the System Restore entry when you boot from the disk (you may also want to try actually using System Restore to make sure that it works)
4) Then make the registry edits to the Start key in both ControlSet001 and CurrentControlSet (changing the value to 3)
5) Reboot and see if the errors recur.

In the event that the system doesn't boot:

1) Boot from the System Repair disc and use the System Restore option to restore the system to a point before the changes were made.

Good luck!

FWIW - my laptop (from 2006) passes the compatibility tests - but it's still not working right with Win8. I suspect a BIOS issue - but as I'm not a BIOS programmer I can't even figure out how to fix it. This may be the same thing for your system.

Also, please note that the latest 680i mobo drivers (which include the nvstor.sys storage driver) from nVidia are for Win7. This says to me that nVidia has decided not to support Win8 on that platform. In other words, if there's problems because of this - there won't be any support from nVidia.

And, just to muddy the waters a bit, this page states that the chipset is Win8 compatible: Windows Compatibility Center: Find Updates, Drivers, & Downloads for Windows 8, Windows RT and Windows 7

Please zip up and upload the latest memory dumps.
Based on our analyzing them, I'd suggest aggressively testing the hardware to figure out what's causing the problems.
In most cases this'll involve stripping down the system and testing to see if these components are causing the problems: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

While waiting for the analysis, try these free diagnostics to see if they can point out anything: Hardware Diagnostics

I was able to successfully change the start values back to 3 without crashing the system, but the BSOD's continue. The processors are no longer disabled. I'm going to try to update the firmware for the 680i sli now to see if that helps.

Please note that the Creative sound drivers continue to be very, very old. I would strongly suggest uninstalling ALL of the Creative stuff and physically removing the card from your system while we're testing.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

  • OS
    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!
    Computer type
    Laptop
    System Manufacturer/Model
    Samsung/NP780
    CPU
Came with the laptop (i7 of some sort)
    Motherboard
Pretty sure that it has one, but haven't checked inside the case!
    Memory
upgraded to 12 gB from 8 gB
    Graphics Card(s)
has switchable - Intel/ATI - Used wrong drivers, now ATI card is inop :( Will have to fix it soon!
    Sound Card
I'm nearly deaf, so this isn't used often
    Monitor(s) Displays
Touchscreen on laptop/32" Toshiba on HDMI (laid the Sharp TV on a mouse and cracked the screen!)
    Screen Resolution
    800x600
    Hard Drives
One Samsung 1tB drive - 5400 rpm. Gonna switch to a 7200/10000 rpm or an SSD (if I can find $500 for a 1tB SSD!)
    - Switched to 500 gB Samsung 840 series SSD - WOW!!!
    PSU
Why do we ask this for laptops?
    Case
Silver with a neat Samsung logo
    Cooling
sub-par, gotta get around to working on it soon Worked on it - still sub-par! :(
    Keyboard
Microsoft Natural - the same one I've used since it orignally came out around 1995
    Mouse
    no Mouse - Trackball!!!!
    Internet Speed
too slow when I'm waiting for a download to finish
    Browser
Yes, I use this (Firefox mostly, w/IE next most)
    Antivirus
    Windows Defender and Windows Firewall
    Other Info
    I'm handsome and a snappy dresser :0)
I've run hardware checks on my hard drive and memory sticks. The hard drive passed and both sticks went through 15 passes without any errors. I uninstalled the sound card and physically removed it. Since then, I've had numerous crashes. From reviewing the dump files, it appears all recent crashes have been attributed to nvstor32.sys, which I updated last night. I'm hoping we're able to identify what the sole cause of the problem is, because I do like Win 8. However, my computer has become pretty much useless because it crashes after a maximum of 10 minutes of use. I've resigned myself to having to purchase Win 7 (I upgraded from XP to Win 8) in order to restore my computer back to a functioning device. I'm still holding out hope that the problem can be fixed, but I'm realistic at the same time. I've attached the most recent dump file that shows all of the nvstor32.sys crashes. I'm working on the remaining drivers.

Win7 came out in 2009, but it is much more forgiving of older BIOS's than Win8 (IMO)
It's going to cost you about $100 (US) for a copy of Win7 - why not just splurge on a whole new system?
Mainstream support for Win7 ends in January of 2015 - Security updates should be available for another 5 years after that.
