Solved BSOD System Service Exception

Hello, my friends. Posting here because I desperately need someone to check my dump files to see why my netbook keeps crashing on me a couple times every day. It's only happened while using Google Chrome or Windows (File) Explorer.

I would have more dump files, but I accidentally deleted them with CCleaner (remembered to turn off that checkbox now). But I still have two from crashes today.

I'm running Windows 8 on an Acer Aspire One AO725-0687 Netbook with an AMD C-70 APU and 2 GB RAM.

Included in the attachment are two dump files from the crashes. The BSOD mentions it as being a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, and the Action Center once claimed that one of the crash occurrences was caused by the AMD video driver and that there was an update available to fix the problem (though I have the latest driver version for it as far as Acer is concerned because AMD doesn't even publish the drivers for the Radeon HD 7290 on their website). Other than that the only thing the action center has told me is that the reliability curve graph took a nose dive. I did re-install the AMD drivers just to be sure.

Only software I know of having installed before the crashes started occurring was a program called Desktop Restore that saved the position of desktop icons on Windows 7 but apparently didn't work with Windows 8, so I uninstalled it today. Also installed before the crashes started was Quicktime Player and the Windows SkyDrive program that adds the Skydrive folder to the Windows Explorer Library shortcuts.

Many thanks to whoever would like to analyze these dump files.

EDIT - Crashed again while Idling on Google Chome after posting this thread - Have another dump file! :D

Hi and welcome to the forums.

The BSOD is caused by your Wireless Network Adapter Driver (Broadcom 802.11 Network Adapter wireless driver).

I did a quick Google search but couldn't find the updated Windows 8 driver on the manufacturer's website.
Perhaps you can check in Windows Update if the updated drivers are available for you.

Thanks a bunch for the analysis (wish I could do that). This is strange because that is the latest Broadcom Driver that I grabbed from Acer's website and have had it installed since January without issues. I'll see if I can revert to a different version tomorrow and check back with a "mark as solved" if that fixes it.

Thanks.

Hmm, so I went to device manager and did "Update Driver." I had a version 6.x.x.x driver there from Broadcom, and Windows "updated" it to a 5.x.x.x version (which fails to automatically connect to Wi-Fi even more frequently than the 6.x.x.x version). But it crashed again today while using Mozilla. Here's another dump file.

Guess I'll try another driver version or rollback via device manager or something.

EDIT - Well, I tried uninstalling the 6.x.x.x. driver and re-installing them with another copy of the drivers from Acer's website, but still got a crash. I'll try installing the 5.x.x.x version from Acer's website (rather than via windows) and see what happens. Unfortunately, that version will be more glitchy in auto-connecting to Wi-Fi than the 6.x.x.x version already is.

Another Dump File:

EDIT 2 - Uninstalled the 6.x.x.x Broadcom drivers and installed 5.x.x.x drivers from Acer's websire, but still got a BSOD.

Thanks for the reply. That's so funny, I literally just 10 minutes ago found a similar mention of that KB2778344 update causing problems with AMD drivers, so I uninstalled it and hid it as mentioned in that blog. All it took was a google search of ": ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x7A040) " and I found someone with the exact same dump files here: Windows 8 System Service Exception error - Microsoft Community

Indeed, these BSOD's didn't start until the date that update came out.

If I don't get any more BSOD for a few days, I'll come back and marked as solved.

Thanks!

Omitting/uninstalling Windows Updates is asking for trouble. There's no telling what reliability/performance/security problems will remain unfixed (and will leave your system vulnerable). Additionally, from what I've seen, Windows Updates are more rigorously tested than most other updates - and as such they are less likely to be the problem on your system.

I'd suggest that more diagnostics are necessary to nail down the exact cause and to attempt to fix that cause rather than removing Windows Updates. In the case of recent video drivers problems this may entail either updating the video drivers to the latest available version - or by rolling them back to a previously stable version.

I'll agree that I'm not too keen on the idea of uninstalling Windows updates, particularly security updates, but there are only two driver versions for this AMD video card, the latest one being the one I have installed now, and I'm pretty sure I had tried the older one but still got the BSOD's

After uninstalling the update, I've gotten no more BSOD's, so an incompatibility with the AMD Drivers and whatever changes KB2778344 brought seems to be the problem, and it has caused BSOD for other people with AMD drivers (the Microsoft forums thread I linked to has 8 other people as having this issue).

At this point, having the update installed would be far more compromising in terms of reliability and performance than having it installed. I can't have this poor netbook crashing three times a day with a BSOD.

Apparently, we have to wait until Microsoft or AMD releases a fix, though maybe people with a different AMD card can fix the issue by rolling back to older video drivers.

I had a similar problem, but a recent AMD update seems to have fixed my problem. Perhaps It's worth giving it a shot. I am no expert, just a fellow victim.

There is a recent Windows update that fixes issues with AMD processors that "might" help. Unfortunately I deleted the email with the link to the topic, so I can't pull it up. It was posted by auggy at the Microsoft Technet forums and I gave it a "Helpful reply" comment this morning (if you care to search for it).

Also, I've found several problems with the HD audio component in AMD/ATI drivers recently. So I wonder if the "Drivers Only" installation posted at this link might help: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure

EDIT: Thank goodness for the History feature. Here's the link to the KB article about the AMD update: A microcode update is available for Windows 8-based computers that use AMD processors

Interesting. I checked my Windows Update history, and it appears that KB2818604 (The microupdate for AMD processors) had been installed one day prior (February 26th) to when I was still having BSOD's and thus uninstalled the KB2778344, so it looks like that update actually didn't fix the issue for my hardware (even if it does mention that it's for "AMD C-Series Processor with AMD Radeon HD Graphics."

As for the Driver Only installation you mentioned, I can't do that (at least not in the way that post states) because this graphics adapter doesn't use the "
generic ATI drivers." In fact, the drivers I have for the AMD C-70 APU with HD Radeon 7290 drivers are available only from the Acer website; they don't even exist on AMD's website (go figure).

However, I think that the installers for the drivers I have actually have the option of omitting the HD Audio Drivers, but aren't those the one for the HDMI? If so, I wouldn't want to do that because I do use the HDMI port.

Maybe I'll try reinstalling KB2778344 just to see if KB2818604 really does fix the issue.

Thanks for the help guys.

You can install without the HDMI stuff to see if that helps (just temporarily - for testing).
Then you'll know if it's the cause of the BSOD or not.
Then you can go ahead and install everything if you'd like.

Yeah, good idea. Agh but I don't want to see any more BSOD's .

I might just be lazy and not do anything since even if the HDMI driver is the issue, I'd have to re-install it anyway to use the HDMI port and then keep KB2778344 supressed.

I'll post here if I try it though.
