Lag BSOD then failure to reboot

Didn't know where else to go so I'm posting here. I run a machine that I built and recently installed windows 8 a few months ago. As of now I haven't been pushing it and using the machine aggressively as I have with windows 7 previously. What I mean by that is I would have multiple programs running (mainly adobe) and too many chrome tabs, while only ever placing to sleep, rebooting once a week.

NOT the case since I installed Window 8! I only use chrome (the non-windows app version), and Open Office.

Suddenly it will lag on me. Having task manager open it would sayy 100% disk usage when nothing is being run. I thought it was windows maintenance and have since rescheduled the run.

Now it will lag anytime to the point where it will come up with the BSOD splash screen ("something unexpected.. system will reboot") and restarts. When it restarts it will fail to boot from disc. I have to physically turn off the computer with the button and restart that way. It will boot fine. Then the cycle happens again.

I have attached the dump files as per instructions. If you need any more information, please let me know.

  • OS
    Windows 8
    CPU
    Intel(R) Core (TM)2 6600 @ 2.4GHz 900MHz
    Motherboard
    Asus
    Memory
    8 GB
    Graphics Card(s)
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 (x 2)
I'm late for work. A quick look at your reports doesn't show any memory dumps - so hardware is suspect.
Please start with these free hardware diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Then move onto these if the other's pass: Additional Hardware Diagnostics
Please post back with the results of the diagnostics.

I'll post back with more after work.

Please rerun the data collection app again - it's missing a few of the reports. Let it run for at least 15 minutes (or until it tells you that it's done).

Your BIOS dates from 2006. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

FWIW - I've seen a lot of issues with the Asus P5 series of boards. I usually recommend this:
- DO NOT use the AUTO setting for memory. Go to the RAM manufacturer's website and get the recommended settings for the RAM. Then set those settings manually in the BIOS
- one person with a 2009 BIOS has experienced success by updating the BIOS. This is dangerous and one simple mistake can easily damage your motherboard so it won't work. Be VERY, VERY CAREFUL!!!
- one person reports bad caps ( Badcaps.net - How To Identify ) in this post: [SOLVED] Bad overclock and now can't load windows 7 - Tech Support Forum

As of late June 2012 - I haven't seen many issues with these boards over the last several months.

You have a Realtek RTL8187 Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter
I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win7/Win8 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7(and I suspect with Win8) - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7/Win8 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.
