Hello Guys,,
I am new to the forum and this is my second post. My home built rig (see systemspec for details) is about 4 years old and has been overclocked since day onewith no problems. I decided to install a fresh format/install of Windows 8 pro64bit (see below for history) on a new Samsung SSD 840 Pro 512GB harddrive. The rest of the hardware and settings are exactly the same apartfrom the extra hard drive. I used to run Vista 32bit.
I installed it on Saturday 19th January 2013 and it ran fine for a week, Ispent the whole of that weekend (18hrs each day), benchmarking, testing, installing software, adjusting settings and installing/setting upmany metro apps. The following week after work I was finishing offinstalling software etc etc from 6pm to 4am in the morning to thisSaturday pm just gone (26th Jan) so it had had plenty of use whilst Ihad virtually no sleep!!
At 8.30pm (1 week later) I had finally finished the reinstall apart frominstalling some games and was feeling really pleased with my refreshed PCwhen I got the modern Windows 8 version of the BSD, it said somethingabout it going wrong and started to reboot, the system failed to boot andsaid it needed to do a refresh but some apps would be lost, I wasn't keento do that as I'd just spent all that time reinstalling everything.
I restarted the PC several times and noticed that my d: drive (just a backupdrive with "My Pictures" on) was missing from the ACHI BIOS uponboot, I unplugged the computer and tried several more boot attempts and eventuallyit started and the D; drive returned. Windows seemed to survive except some ofmy neatly organized start menus were jumbled up, my media libraries were corruptand would not open and Photo Gallery would not open but I suspect this wassomething to do with the media library corruption.
I then spent the next few days benchmarking and torture testing the computer, running Hard drive tests (Hutil from Samsung) and checking smart data of the disappearingdrive these could not find any drive errors and the drive has beenfine ever since. The smart data errors I already had changed from the crash soI suspect that the d: was doing something media related when thecrash reoccurred. The errors were 01/01/2013 - D:\Damaged sectors=2---- Calibration failures=32, and after checking after crash 26/01/2013 -D:\Damaged sectors=3 ---- Calibration failures=34. The extra errors could haveoccurred at any time since 1/01/2013. The Samsung software still passes thedrive and the SMART data give the overall fitness for this drive is 90%and the overall performancefor this drive is 90%.
Anyway I thought this was just a one off but in the early hours of this morningthe desktop froze solid, the mouse would not move and the clock stopped, I gaveit 30 minutes before hitting the reset switch. I just hope this is not going tobe a regular occurrence.
I am using the same software but updated to the latest versions from my oldVista install and have downloaded the latest drivers 64 bit for everything. Iwonder if someone would be so kind as to look at my Dump file logs to see ifthere is anything that could be causing this. I don't mind the odd crash butnot when the computer won't start, I found Vista to be a bit slow but in the 4years since I built my system it never failed to boot and it was rock solidwith the odd crash.
This is notrelated to fault but just a few early thought s about WIn 8:-
I think thiswebsite is going to be very useful for my transition to Windows 8. Got to say Itried the preview release of Windows 8 and hated it with a passion so much so Ideleted in within 30 minutes. I tried another install a few months later afterfinding out that Microsoft was letting users upgrade for £25 so I thought I'dgive it another go. I still found it frustrating but tried a few of the StartMenu apps and warmed to it. After having it installed for a week with theStart8 Start button app which gives you the best of both worlds I'm starting tolove it, I purchased a SAMSUNG SSD 840 Pro 512 GB and did a freshformat/install it's really quick but I just hope this crashing doesn'tcontinue.
Thanks
Tony

- I did a fresh format and install of Windows 8 64 Bit Pro. Sorry but I couldn't live without a start button so I have installed the Start8 start menu which is great. I try sometimes not to use it but find metro frustrating to find programs as I have many. I will use Metro for apps only and desktop of serious computing.
