Solved Windows 8 Constantly Crashing recently

I recently updated my graphics card driver to the Windows 8 64 bit version...

And when I load Google Chrome (for some reason it always seems to be the desktop Chrome browser that causes this) my computer gets kinda slow for two seconds and then the blue screen of death comes up with the sad face.

It's happened many times, even without opening Chrome as well (I was woken up with the sound of my computer turning on twice throughout the night).

Any idea what's wrong?

Well, Windows has the ability to recover from video driver crashes. That seems to indicate that it's something a little deeper. What video card? What driver and version?

Hello David,

Please read the instructions here: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions :)

Too late. Unfortunately...When I power on my computer now, it says "Missing operating system..." after the HP loading screen appears.

Even if I could keep it on, I could hardly have enough time to navigate to a website on my stupid college's limited network, navigate to this site, and download any fixer files. No chance. I'm stuck.

NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT, 4GB is the video card, and I can't get more information on the version because my Win8 machine keeps crashing...

Yep, it's just that I have a family and a job - so I can't be here all the time.
Please be patient, there's just not that many of us who do BSOD analysis.

What were the results of the bootable hardware diagnostics that I suggested earlier?

Your BIOS dates from 2010. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

Keep an eye on the free space on your hard drive. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff in the background. With larger drives you can get down around 10% before you start noticing performance issues.

These devices aren't working properly:
Microsoft Hyper-V Virtual Machine Bus Provider ROOT\VMBUS\0000 This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.
Microsoft Hyper-V Virtualization Infrastructure Driver ROOT\VID\0000 This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.
Microsoft Hyper-V Virtual Disk Server ROOT\STORVSP\0000 This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.
I'm not all that familiar w/Hyper-V, but would suggest uninstalling/removing it and then reinstalling the latest version.

Memory dump shows a STOP 0x116 error in your nVidia drivers. Try the troubleshooting steps here: Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117

If this doesn't fix it, please look into issues with Comodo or Razer Game Booster
Comodo has a past history of causing some issues if it's internal components become corrupted (which it did often enough for us to notice it previously). Uninstalling it and rebooting will tell you if it's to blame.

Recently I've seen a problem or two with Razer Game Booster. To see if it's the issue, please uninstall it and reboot to see if that stops the problems.

If you do determine that it's either of these, please post back to verify it - as it will help others who come looking for help with the same/similar problems.

Good luck!

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

My apologies, I did not intend to seem impatient! Just trying to figure this whole process out.

I will try my best to use the diagnostics, but my computer barely lasts 5-7 minutes before it gets a blue screen and restarts.

As far as updating BIOS, Does this look like what you're talking about? Pavilion PC BIOS Upgrade | HP® Support
I'm finding it confusing that it's giving instructions on making a floppy disc...

I did my best to uninstall Hyper-V, although it did not show up under Control Panel > Uninstall a Program. So I removed it using these instructions Installing and Uninstalling Roles and Features Using Ocsetup

It's possible I obtained Hyper-V when I installed the Windows Phone 8 SDK and/or Windows 8 SDK. Should I uninstall both of those as well?

I uninstalled all of my nVidia drivers, Razer Game Booster and Comodo.

As far as the drivers you suggested I update, which Rt630x64.sys driver should I get? 10/100/1000M Gigabit Ethernet, 10/100M Fast Ethernet, or 10M Ethernet? Beyond that, I don't know if it's PCI or PCI Express, nor what model it is. How would I Find that out? Realtek

And I also can't find the amdsbs.sys driver because I don't see any "AMD Athlon II 630" on any of the lists. http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx#

I also couldn't find my graphics card driver (nvlddmkm.sys) on this site: Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers Is NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT on the list somewhere?

Thanks so much for your help, I appreciate it.

Also, attached is a new .zip of another file dump after I uninstalled those programs.

*Update*

When I loaded my computer, all of the Library files didn't work except for "David" (my User Library).

The blue screen issue continues to occur, namely when I open a program, load too many things at once, or load the Metro start screen. But it doesn't always happen, only sometimes, often after 5 minutes or so.

I cannot connect to the internet. The limited internet at my college is flawed and actually overloaded right now, so it's down on a lot of computers even on Ethernet. So not only is it nearly impossible to try and do the diagnostics, but I also cannot access the drivers required.

I am currently on my MacBook pro and have been using a USB flash drive to transfer data from my Windows desktop to my Mac laptop. It's the only way I'm connecting on this forum.

Here is something I'm considering...

I have all of my files backed up on an external hard drive (The entire C drive is backed up).

Should I perform a system reset/refresh? I'm not really in a position to reinstall all of my programs (in a college dorm room with terrible internet speeds and all of the software packages are at home), but do you think it might fix the issues? I've done a system refresh already, nearly a month ago. I tried a system restore, but it has no record of one even though I remember making one just after I reinstalled my programs following my refresh a little less than a month ago.

I also have a RESTORE drive plugged in and is bootable, which can assist me in refreshing/resetting or trying other things.

I suppose I could try to download the diagnostics and drivers to my USB stick via my Mac laptop, transfer them to my Windows computer, try to run them before the blue screen occurs, and see what I can do from there.

Attached is yet another zip of an even more current dump file.

Bootable diagnostics are burned to a CD and are run outside of Windows - so if you can see the manufacturer's splash screen, you can likely run the bootable diagnostics without problems. There are instructions for the memory and hard drive diagnostic on how to boot to the disk(s).

Just FYI, I am having severe issues with my Win8 installation right now.
I can't run dump files, and my other Win8 installation crashes every 2 hours (it's the end of life for the Release Preview).
I'll attempt the Release Preview again in the morning and will run what I can in that short time.

I'll be wiping my system and reinstalling the RTM version of Win8 starting tomorrow afternoon - so my responses may be delayed for the next day or two.

Sorry!

Hey it's OK, again I appreciate your help. I really couldn't do anything or make any progress without you.

I have several limitations: I am somewhat poor at the moment, I have no CDs here at college (I can try to borrow one or something), and my internet doesn't work on my desktop (network issues). In addition to all that, I am new at using the diagnostics you provided me with, is there a tutorial or guide on how to use them?

I do have a working MacBook Pro, which I am very grateful for. If there are any tips you can give me to run these diagnostics via the splash screen on my desktop but use my LAPTOP to MAKE the CDs/bootable drives, etc. I'd appreciate it!

That goes for anyone on this forum... ;) I am most willing to be patient.

Tutorials for the diagnostics are rather simple at my site. More detailed descriptions are available at the manufacturer's website.
There are ways to make bootable USB drives - if you have a USB/Flash drive that you can use? Try using Yumi from YUMI - Multiboot USB Creator (Windows) | USB Pen Drive Linux

You have a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller (from the systeminfo.txt report)
The PCIe is the slot/bus type and the GBE stands for Gigabit Ethernet
So use this link to download the Windows 8 drivers: Realtek

Don't worry about amdsbs.sys - it's not high on my list of likely suspects

The 9500 GT cards are a part of the 9-series video cards. Here's a link to the download: Drivers | GeForce

There are no new memory dumps in the uploads that you've given us. This adds to the suspicion that it's a hardware problem.
Since video is involved, have you looked at the video card to ensure that it has adequate air flow and that the fan is spinning (and the cooler is clear of dust/hairballs. If it has a power cord, is that cord firmly seated?

Are you able to borrow another video card to try in your system? Or, does your system have an inbuilt video card that isn't being used (look for another VGA/DVI port on the back). The VGA/DVI port is the one that accepts the cable to your monitor.

The BIOS update may be needed, but leave that alone for now. At some point, if the problems appear unsolvable to you, you may want to try it. BUT BE CAREFUL!!! One mistake can actually destroy the motherboard!

As for the Refresh/Reset - I'd have suggested that already, but you don't want to lose your data. Also, I'd have suggested a wipe and reinstall of Windows - but again, that will wipe out all of your data.

Since you are having shutdowns without the BSOD being saved, it's most likely a hardware error (IMO). In case it's a heat issue, please try this (BUT BE CAREFUL!!!):

When the system shuts down, physically unplug the system from the wall and open the case.
Holding the metal of the case with one hand, reach around (WITHOUT TOUCHING ANYTHING) close to all the components inside the case. You'll notice some spots are warmer than others. What you're looking (feeling) for is something that's much warmer (read "hot") than the rest. This "hot" that you're looking for is either almost hot enough to burn you - or is hot enough to burn you (so again I say - BE CAREFUL and DON'T TOUCH!!!) I've received 2nd degree burns doing this!!! Please let us know if you find something, or if nothing is all that hot (very warm is OK, almost hot enough to burn you is not).

Good luck!

So I used someone's compressed air can to blow dust out (especially around my graphics card) but then it ran out...

Anyway, when I turned it in, it just barely loaded the Start Screen when it froze for a few seconds, then gave me a blue screen. I didn't notice any stopping of the fans, and when I put my hands near compartments of my PC, I didn't feel any heat. Anywhere.

I am now using a Dell laptop with Consumer Preview (can only use it for an hour at a time).

I also happened to have purchased a Windows 7 upgrade disc today for $10 (our university was having a sale). Can I use that disc to revert back to Windows 7? If so, what are the repercussions?

I tried using the YUMI program, but I couldn't find any ISO's to use nor did I have an idea of where to get them. The drivers with the links you suggested are now on a USB drive (Realtek and GeForce), but I don't know what good it does me if I can't install them.

What do you think?

Thanks again so much for your help.

ISO's will be available from the MemTest site and the hard drive site(s) in the articles that I suggested for checking your hardware

Reverting to Win7 can be done - it just might take a bit of time to get all the drivers straightened out - but it's not all that difficult.
Reverting to Win7 will also serve fore a couple of diagnostic tests

If it continues to BSOD, then it's either hardware or a compatibility issue (this is a broad generalization - don't take it too literally)
If it doesn't, then it will serve to help confirm that your system probably isn't Win8 compatible.

I haven't had time to look in detail at the Paste stuff - but it appears that the Windows file system had some damage that the Linux tried to fix. I'd suggest looking at a wipe and reinstall of Windows (either 8 or 7 - your choice)

Here's a "how-to" for a clean, diagnostic install of Windows (was written before 8 came out - so adjust accordingly):
Backup, Wipe, and "Clean Install" of Windows
For testing purposes, it's best to install Windows "clean".
This is, basically, installing it the way that Microsoft intended (using drivers from Windows Update).
This procedure is for Windows 7 and Vista.

You will need your installation/recovery DVD(s) before you start. Once you wipe the hard drive there's no going back!!!

1. Backup all your data.
This will wipe everything off of your hard drive, so anything that you want to keep will need to be saved elsewhere.

NOTE: If this is due to an infection, remember to scan the data with another system's current antivirus in order to locate and remove any malware.
NOTE: Disconnect any additional hard drives (internal and external) that you may have installed. This may break any multi-boot setups that you have, so be prepared to conduct recovery operations on them once you're done. Don't forget that, if this is due to an infection, the additional hard drives may be infected also.

2. Connect the system to the internet (if the system says disconnect from the Internet, then do so).

3. Use one of these free utilities to wipe the hard drive clean:
KillDisk ( Freeware Download Active@ KillDisk ).
DBAN ( DBAN Download | Darik's Boot And Nuke )
This will also delete any recovery partitions on the system - so the installation/recovery DVD's are essential!!!

4. Install Windows by booting from the installation/recovery DVD - DO NOT tweak any settings!!!

5. Visit Windows Update and get all updates

6. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)

7. Visit Windows Update and get the Service Packs for your system. (usually under Important Updates).
Read these notes for installing Windows 7 SP1: Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center
Read these notes for installing Vista SP1: Learn how to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Read these notes for installing Vista SP2: Learn how to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Search Google/Bing for installing other OS's Service Packs.

8. Visit Windows Update and get any other available updates

9. Download, install, and update a free antivirus so you don't get infected while testing ( Free AntiVirus ).

10. Test to see if the problem remains.
If the problems persist, then the problem is most likely with your hardware.
If the problems are gone, then proceed with installing the latest version of your favorite programs, testing after each one for errors.

CAVEAT: If you have an Asus motherboard, check the date on the C:\Windows\System32\driver\ASACPI.sys file. 2004/2005 is a problem, 2009/2010 is OK. Updates are available at the Asus support website.

CAVEAT: If you have a Sony system, make sure that you DO NOT have the 2007 (or earlier) version of the Sony Firmware Extension Parser (SFEP.sys). Update this driver immediately!!!

So I talked to the tech department here on campus, and they're convinced it's a driver issue. They're recommending that I do a clean install, but upon learning I do not have a Windows 8 disc, they suggested to try a reset of Windows 8 and copying the files back onto my hard drive from my external backup.

It is likely that my system is not compatible with Windows 8, so I may downgrade back to 7 if this doesn't work.

What do you think?

If it is truly a driver/compatibility issue - then their path is the most sensible (since you're out of luck if you need to reinstall Win8).

I guess it just depends on how much more you want to fuss with Win8.
Good luck!

This thread is rather convoluted now. If I were you, I'd install Windows 7 so I'd have at least a working system. see here: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version - Windows 7 Forums

If the internet access at your campus is as poor as you say, redownloads of windows 8 to give you an installable iso would be best done with a file downloads manager which will allow for interrupted and resumed downloads. Microsoft File Transfer Manager is specifically for Microsoft downloads thru Technet or MSDN. The 90 Day Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation would be more use than the Consumer Preview, if the Dell laptop is capable of running that version.
It is not clear if the Windows 8 Pro with Media Center was the Upgrade Windows 8 Pro subsequently upgraded to WMC. If the original download of the upgrade is not available, it can be redownloaded http://www.eightforums.com/installa...ownload-your-windows-8-upgrade-setup-d-l.html You just need the original emails with the product keys for the upgrade and the wmc upgrade.

I would not attempt to recover the installation as mentioned in the other thread, just the data and reinstall the programs.

My situation has become a bit convoluted...but I did some digging today and found a friend of mine has a Windows 8 disc, I used my key (found it), did a clean install with a wipe of the drive, and am beginning to re-install programs and copy over files from my external hard drive.

What's disappointing is that I still don't know if it was a driver issue or hardware or what it was. The good news is that, it's working (at least for now) and that, despite my fellow college student's WiFi and Ethernet constantly giving out, mine's stayed fairly stable and has allowed me to make quite some progress.

Thank you so much usasma, you've been extremely helpful to me and I've learned a lot as a result. I appreciate the time you took in offering me your solutions.

I can now mark this as solved...and hope for the best, I suppose.
