BSOD craches & Restarting issue

Hi

I hope someone on here can help me.
I’ve got a Dell StudioXPS 8100 PC which I’ve recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (I upgraded just before Christmas).

The problem is that over the last few days (probably 4-5) I’ve started getting loads of BSOD errors/crashes on a relatively regular basis. The errors ive been getting are

  • BAD_POOL_HEADER
  • DPC_WATCHDOG VIOLATION
Please could someone help me take a look at the attached dump files and advise on what is causing the issue and how I can go about fixing it?

Also, ever since the upgrade, Windows 8 is refusing do carry-out a Restart properly. Whenever I try to restart the PC, It shuts down as normal, but then freezes/hangs saying “Restarting” for hours on end, until I do a forced restart using the Power button. Because of this restarting issue, I’ve been unable to complete some Windows Updates as it appears part of the “finishing off” is done during the shut down process and not during start up.

Please could you take a look at the attached dump files and help me track this down as soon as possible?

Many Thanks in advance

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

Your BIOS dates from 2010. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

You have at least 3 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

1 memory dump names VBoxNetFlt.sys, a driver component of your Virtual Box networking sub-system. Please uninstall the drivers, then download and install a fresh copy of the latest, Win8 compatible version from the Virtual Box website.

4 memory dumps implicate (but doesn't directly blame) networx.sys - a component of the NetWorx bandwidth monitoring program from SoftPerfect. Please uninstall this program to test and see if it's a part of the problem.

Please uninstall your Western Digital software. It dates from 2008 and is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.

Older versions of UltraMon are also known to cause problems - please uninstall it (yours dates from 2008). If you want to continue using it, please locate the latest, Win8 compatible version for your system.

Your VNC drivers also date from 2008 - please remove them also.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hi

Thanks for the detailed post. No need to apologize for the delayed response, I understand that this assistance is voluntary and that each of us has our own personal lives as well :)

Firstly, Dell is not listing and newer BIOS software for my system, I've checked.

I have the HDD, but two of them are USB external ones, while the other is the internal 2TB (2x1TB in RAID) as supplied by Dell when I purchased the PC.

As I've had all these drives plugged in and had no,issues until the last few days, so would be surprised if they are the cause.

All those drivers (Cyberlink, Symantec, Ultramon, Networx) were installed by installers provided by these companies, downloaded directly from their websites in the last week, so again doubt there are newer versions available. The Western Digital software was installed by Windows 8 when it saw the WD external USB drive was plugged in,this includes Win 8/RT ready features with Live Tiles support. I therefore assumed thered be no issues. I have no problems uninstalling it though, as I don't really need it.

I must say though, I do find it surprising that some of the drivers/files date back to 2008/2010!!

I did however install VirtualBox in the last week, which, thinking about it now, could be about the time the issues started. One question though, could this cause conflicts/issues even,if Virtualbox is NOT being used?

I will uninstall VirtualBox tomorrow to give it a try and recheck for updated drivers.

I'll let you know how things go.

Yes, it can cause issues even if it's not being used (but it's less likely). I routinely ask people to update drivers on disabled devices because of this - but I have no data as to the effectiveness of this.
