Driver_Verifier_Detected_Violation, Refresh, all gone!

I started getting a blue screen yesterday when I switch on my Windows 8 Pro PC with error Driver_Verifier_Detected_Violation. I did not install anything new nor did any changes to my PC the last time I used it.

After the system restart itself, it prompted me to do a refresh so as not to lose any files. I did a refresh and was able to login though it was not my original login picture. After logged in, I realise everything looks new and all my files were gone, including programs, apps, etc.

I browse through my C drive and saw a Window.old file. I searched within the file, can’t find any folder in <User> and any of my files (documents, photos, music, etc) are missing.

Unfortunately, I do not have any backup and unable to engage a data recovery company as it will cost me over $2,000, after getting 2 quotes.

Has anyone experienced this + any advices will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Check in the Users folder in your current installation (on your C: drive - not in the Windows.old folder).
What are the names of the accounts? Do any seem similar (or are any named "Temp")?

BTW - make sure that the Driver Verifier is turned off!

Hi Usasma,

Thank you for the reply.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find any old files in both folders. However, I used Recuva and was able to recover most of it, though some files are unrecoverable or damaged.

I am rather surprised by 'Refresh' for Windows 8. Have since made all back-ups.

Thanks again for you help.
