Solved Computer crashes at random times after upgrade to Win 8

Hi All,

After upgrading my Win 7 laptop (Lenovo E530) to Win 8, the laptop crashes at random times.
I've run various checks in device manager, using the SFC command, etc. but can't find what the cause of the crashes are. I've looked at the dump files and see it's listed as a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE, with bugcheck code of )x9F, and it points to the following two processes:
ntoskrnl.exe
ntkrnlmp.exe

From what I've read it's usually other drivers or processes that cause these two processes to fail.
I've attached a zip file with all of the system info and dump files.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Chris

Looks like it's the Lenovo HDD utility driver (part of the IBM Thinkpad Active Protection System) (Apsx64.sys)
Please uninstall it, then ensure that you download and install a Win8 compatible version.

Considering the number of older Symantec/Norton drivers in the dump files, I'd have to wonder about that also. Please do this to test:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free anti-virus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- un-install the Norton from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of Norton using this free tool: http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free anti-virus, then check to ensure that the Windows Firewall is turned on.
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's
NOTE: NEVER run more than 1 anti-virus, firewall, Internet Security/Security Center application at the same time.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks for the advice. I tried updating the IBM Thinkpad Active Protection System, and also updated to the latest version of Norton, but the crashes kept happening. I also tried updating many other bits and pieces but nothing worked.

I tried uninstalling the Active Protection System and everything seems to be much better - no crashes for a couple of days. So I guess that was it.

It's a nice surprise being able to open my laptop and start working straight away, without waiting for the computer to reboot :)
I might try reinstalling the Active Protection System at some point in the future, but for the time being I'm just enjoying my laptop working correctly!

Thanks again,
Chris

Make sure you get a version that's compatible with Win8 if it will become available. The current one is not really recommended, seeing your post.

That's for HDD shock protection. In the future, as SSD's will probably become standard, this sort of software will not be needed anymore if the laptop has no hard-disk inside.

I have HP and a similar program to Active Protection System is the HP Driveguard, again for HDD's only in my opinion.
