Solved DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE - Asus P67 Sabertooth

Hello,

I've been trying to figure out my constant crashes on Windows 8 since freshly installing the other day. I've updated firmware and drivers for everything I can think of and still can't get it to run smoothly. Windows 7 was not an issue at all. The majority of my crashes are due to "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE" on hal.dll or ntoskrnl.exe. Crashes seem to happen at ~30min intervals and are much less likely if I am using the computer.

Last night, I re-installed Win8 freshly and the minidumps since then are included. All drivers are currently through Windows and Windows Update.

Some info on my system that may help:
Motherboard - Asus P67 Sabertooth
CPU - Intel i5 2500k
RAM - Patriot 2x8GB PC3-12800 1600MHZ (brand new)
Hard Drives - 2x OCZ Agility 3 SSD (Raid 0)
- Seagate 1TB SATA III
- Hitachi 3TB USB3 External
Video - 2xGigabyte nVidia 560ti (SLI)

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I would like to stick with Win8 (crash-free).

Oh yeah, happy new year!

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis: https://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cr...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

At work we run diagnostics on every system that we take in for repair (before we even start working on it). At a minimum, please run the free diagnostics here: Initial Hardware Diagnostics. For more in-depth diagnostics, please run those listed here: Hardware Diagnostics

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:
There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
- Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.
06 Dec 2011 - This post tends to confirm issues with certain SSD chipsets and certain controllers - [SOLVED] cant find the cause of BSOD F4 - Tech Support Forum
29 May 2012 - The frequency of BSOD's with SSD's seems to have been decreasing over the last several months. It may be approaching time to re-evaluate my stand on their suitability for use in production systems.
10 Nov 2012 - I'm seeing an upswing in SSD errors - but most appear due to older storage controller drivers. I strongly suggest NOT using storage controller drivers that don't date from 2012 (if none are available, don't connect an SSD to that controller)

Memory dumps blame the Microsoft USB attached SCSI driver - this is a new one for me.
I would ensure that you update the firmware for your SSD's and get the latest 2012 drivers for your Intel storage controllers.
If that doesn't help, then I'd suggest that you run these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thank you for your response.

I tried to install SF Diagnostic Tool, but continually get an error installing the .NET Framework 3.5 (Error code 0x800F0922), even after rebooting.

I have already updated the firmware on the SSDs to 2.25 (latest) and the motherboard BIOS version to 3602 (latest).

As for the other steps you've suggested, I will try them and get back to you. Thank you again!

Okay, so I have a couple of updates.

I believe the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE was being caused by my USB3 external hard drive (Toshiba Touro Desk Pro 3TB). Since removing that drive from my system, it has been somewhat stable.

I think I have mostly updated all current drivers but have now received a new BSOD error (MEMORY_MANAGEMENT). If it continues, I will start a new thread on this issue.

As mentioned above, I had a really hard time with the .NET Framework 3.5. For anyone that finds this thread on google, the solution was to open a command window as Admin and use "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth". Many forum posts were saying to re-install windows, but this command was able to fix the issue.

Just for the sake of a complete update, I have now been able to get SF_Diagnostic_Tool to work and have included the grab. This includes the new BSOD error if anyone cares to have a look.

Thank you again for your help!

Don't start a new topic - different errors don't necessarily mean a different problem (and, in most cases, it's the same old problem).

MSINFO32 shows an error that blames the disk hardware. Please run this free hard drive diagnostic: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

The latest dump shows hardware_ram - so please also try this free memory diagnostic: Memory Diagnostics
If it passed, then try Prime95 (also free, listed here: Additional Hardware Diagnostics )

Update your Intel Management Engine Interface software as yours dates from 2010
Please update your Intel Storage controller drivers as yours date from 2011 (and most SSD's need drivers from 2012).

Ok, I have installed the new drivers for Intel. I have a question about iaStorV needing updating/uninstalling. iaStorA updated find, but iaStorV did not. Googling iaStorV did not yield any real results. Is this driver actually being used or require updating? How would I remove it properly?

I have a even newer BSOD error - NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM. This occurred while downloading the new drivers. Upon rebooting, the drivers were corrupted and had to be re-downloaded.

A new SF capture is attached.

As for the memory and hard drive tests, I am unable to run those remotely and will have to perform those later on. However, I did run Prime95 without issue earlier. Also, the RAM is brand new as I suspected it as the source of the problem earlier. It could be the RAM controller on the motherboard, though.

Another update.

Last night, I ran Prime95 and was getting errors almost instantly so I thought my RAM controller might be having some issues.

I let memtest run for 14 hours over night and did not receive any errors. The screenshot is attached.

After this, I rebooted and ran Prime95. After around 45mins, I still have no errors. This screenshot is also attached.

I still need to run some of the hard drive diagnostics which I will do later today.

Run 3 different Prime95 tests (Blend, Small FFT's and Large FFT's).
Run each test immediately after the other
Let each test run for 24 hours or until errors show up (whichever comes first)
Time how long it takes to get errors in each test.
This will help us to see where the errors are coming from.

You have a Core i5 processor, so the memory controller is built into the CPU
Therefore the Prime95 errors are either from your RAM or your CPU (Prime95 affects CPU cache, memory controller, and RAM)

Further tests to help rule out the CPU are the CPU stress tests here: Additional Hardware Diagnostics

I ran all diagnostics I could possibly gather and found no hardware errors. This includes hard drive tests, processor tests and memory tests. However, Prime95 could not last longer than an hour without failing on any of the 3 Prime95 tests.

Keep in mind that on Windows 7, I could overclock and then run Prime95 to my heart's content without ever running into any problems. I never had a BSOD or any crashing whatsoever. The hardware was not even touched while upgrading to Windows 8.

I got really sick of dealing with the problem and replaced the motherboard on a hunch. I bought an Asus Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard which is essentially the newer "Windows 8 compatible" version of my Sabertooth P67. It has some new features, which is okay, but it also has all non-beta drivers and software support for Windows 8 on Asus' website.

After installing it, I installed Windows 8 freshly and am still in the process of making sure all of the drivers are complete. However, I have not yet run into a single instance of a BSOD or any crashing whatsoever. Additionally, Prime95 just ran all night without producing an error. Keep in mind that the processor is still the original i5 2500k. Also, this processor is still highly overclocked.

In summary, I think that the Asus Sabertooth P67 is just not fully compatible with Windows 8. The drivers available for it do not work with it reliably.

That being said, I am absolutely positive that my Hitachi Touro Desk Pro 3TB USB3 drive was responsible for my BSODs at the beginning. It was causing a BSOD approximately every 30mins. After reading other forums regarding this particular external drive, I have found that many people have had similar problems and that Hitachi points to Windows 8 as being the cause. Hopefully either Hitachi and Microsoft continue to try to resolve this issue.

Usasma, thank you for your time and effort in troubleshooting this issue. You provide an excellent service to the Windows 8 community.
