BSOD When Idle on Dell m4500

Sometimes this causes a reboot. Other times the computer just locks up with a distorted lock screen.

    SF Diagnostic zip attached.

The SF Diagnostic zip file is missing the dmp file, please supply this if possible.

Both minidumps are pointing to the file: nvlddmkm.sys which are your Nvidia video card drivers.

My suggestion is to un-install and then re-install your Nvidia graphics card drivers to the latest version for windows 8 64bit:

NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Automatically Detect NVIDIA Products

I have also found some drivers you should also consider updating to windows 8 64bit versions if possible or otherwise un-installed/removed if not needed:

dne64x.sys - Citrix Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport or Cisco Systems VPN Client: Driver Reference Table - dne64x.sys
stdcfltn.sys - Disk Class Filter Driver for Accelerometer by ST MicroElectronics: Driver Reference Table - stdcfltn.sys
tmtdi.sys - Trend Micro Internet Security: Driver Reference Table - tmtdi.sys
    ElbyCDIO.sys - CDRTools/ElbyCDIO/DVD Region Killer/VirtualCloneDrive (elby CloneDVD™ 2)/AnyDVD: Driver Reference Table - ElbyCDIO.sys
VClone.sys - VirtualCloneCD Driver by Elaborate Bytes AG: Driver Reference Table - VClone.sys
Apfiltr.sys - Alps pointing device: Driver Reference Table - Apfiltr.sys
accelern.sys - ST MicroElectronics Accelerometer: Driver Reference Table - Accelern.sys
npf.sys - NetGroup Packet Filter Driver, part of the WinPcap packet capture library: Driver Reference Table - npf.sys (consider un-installing this (WinPcap) it's not compatible with windows 8 from personal experience).
    UltraMonUtility.sys -UltraMon multi-monitor: Driver Reference Table - UltraMonUtility.sys
vstor2-mntapi10-shared.sys - VMware Virtual Storage Volume Driver: Driver Reference Table - vstor2-mntapi10-shared.sys
afcdp.sys - Acronis File Level CDP Kernel Helper: Driver Reference Table - afcdp.sys

    -cheers

    Thanks, milw0rm.

Sadly, the first part of your suggestion didn't help. Working on the second part now.

    Hello,

I use a Dell Precision M4500 as well. Microsoft Update Advisor tell me that update to Windows 8 Pro should work great.
    After running installation, it fails.

It would be interesting to know if you was able to install the Windows 8 Pro Retail version?

Did you solve the problems you mentioned above? Thanks! :-)

I was already running Windows 8. Actually, I'm glad you posted here, because I've been meaning to add some more information and kept forgetting.

I have resolved the issue, in that it no longer happens. Unfortunately, I didn't resolve it by "fixing" anything. I was already running the latest versions available for all of the drivers suggested above.

No, after some time I decided that the problem was related to my power saving options. It seemed to happen either when the computer decided to turn off the display, or perhaps it was trying to turn the display back on, after deciding that I was no longer idle (I often have many tasks running in the background on this machine, and I'm not sure what exactly it would take to "awaken" it).

So, I adopted a simple approach. I turned off the power saving option to turn off the display after idle. I had been getting this crash generally about once a day, and sometimes more often. I've now been running for a week this way, and have had no crashes.
