I posted here a few days ago after multiple BSOD crashes:
http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-crashes-debugging/16280-several-bsod-crashes.html
I followed all of John's recommendations (thanks) and things were OK for a day or so, so I marked that thread as case resolved.

Unfortunately, got a new BSOD now. Attached is the result of the SF Diagnostic Tool.

John, I would appreciate if you could have a look at it. Thanks.

BSOD caused by WerFault.exe which point to Memory Corruption, I suggest to run Memory Test.

I ran mdsched for 12hours, with extended test option. In total 4 passes but no problems found with the memory.

Is there any other cause that can be found in the result from the SF Diagnostic Tool?

hello

I had a new BSOD crash. Attached is the result of the SF diagnostic tool, file turboman2.
I am driven to the wall with these crashes, so I am looking forward to a resolution.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I edited this post because 10minutes after sending the post, I got another crash. See file turboman3.

And yet another crash. See file turboman4.
I hope a pattern can be found.

I looked at your latest turboman4.zip and there are 3 dumpfiles, I looked at each of them and the results as followed:

122812-7171-01.dmp:
Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe ( nt! ?? ::FNODOBFM::`string'+35d9c )

Looks like each BSOD happened randomly but they all pointed to faulty drivers.

  • Have you run sfc /scannow and find out if all your system files are not corrupted ?
  • is your system up to date with Windows Update ?
  • Does your Samsung SSD 840 have the latest firmware ?
  • Do you have the latest BIOS firmware ?

I just can believe that you have so many faulty drivers so if you've done all steps above and found nothing wrong then I suggest you run the Windows Memory Diagnostic:
Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Windows Memory Diagnostic

hello topgun (appropriate name!)
Thanks for the recommendations.
- I followed the advice in the previous post to stop werfault.exe.
- sfc /scannow: I searched for sfc utility, found an app and ran it as an admin. Very briefly a black screen with text appeared and disappeared. Then nothing. So not sure if I did it right or wrong. Can you give instructions how to do it.
- system is uptodate.
- Samsung has latest firmware.
- I have latest Bios. PC is only a month old. Got all the newest bios, firmware, drivers. And recently updated Samsung firmware. As far as I can see: all uptodate.
- I ran mdsched (Windows Memory Diagnostic). See my previous post. Everything OK.

So now, everything OK for an hour. Keeping my fingers crossed. Will post again if I have a new BSOD.
Please let me know about sfc /scannow.

CORRECTION: saw Command Prompt and ran it as administrator. then ran sfc /scannow.
At the end, the message appeared that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Then reference was made to a file C:\Windows\CBS\CBS.log, but I could not find that directory and file.

What shall I do now? Thanks for the help.

Win+X -> Command prompt (Admin) then type in the command prompt window: sfc /scannow
This will scan thru your system files to check for corruption and attempt to fix them.

And by any chance, do you have Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) software installed in your system ?
if you do, uninstall it and re-install with the latest

Below is what should look like after scan:

hey topgun,
Our posts have been sent around the same time. See my previous post about sfc command and result.
I got Intel RST. Shall I get the latest from Intel website or Asus?
I got one SSD for system and programs, and 2 harddisk in RAID1 for data. Does having RAID1 add anything to your assessment?

Here is the screen from the sfc

IAStorUI.exe is part of the Intel Software, I believe if you go to Intel website, you have better chance to get the latest.
RAID1 is used mostly for business environment, for personal use, I won't bother doing it. If you have important data, just copy to an external hard drive.

Now, if sfc resulted in errors, that means you have some system files corrupted and that would definitely causing BSOD. The CBS folder is a system folder and probably hidden, you need to open the Folder Options and uncheck "Hide protected Operating system files..." in order to see it.

Edit: you actually don't need the Folder Options. are you sure you look in: "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" ?
One thing you need to do is taking ownership of CBS.log to be able to open it, then look in there which files are corrupted.

Then follow this instruction to replace those corrupted files:

Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD - Windows 7 Forums

it should be the same for Windows 8.

Good luck !!!

hello topgun,
I found the log file and could open it. But the log file is big, and it shows many corrupted files. Too many.
I will now play back an image of my SSD from a time when all still looked OK. Then follow the werfault advice and run sfc.
I did not have any BSOD for a few hours now after following werfault advice. So maybe going back to an older image with hopefully no corrupt system files and disabling werfault will do the trick.

hello topgun
I restored to an earlier image. Everything looks OK but when I run sfc /scannow, there are still errors reported which cannot be repaired.
What shall I do now? Is it OK like that even with unrepaired errors or will that over time lead to BSOD crashes?
I can restore to another image, which I made immediately after a clean install of Windows 8 without installation of additional software. Would restoring to that image and take it from there be better?
Or would you recommend a complete fresh install (I am a bit hesitant as it is more complex for me).
Thanks for the help.

Hi,
No, it's not OK. It should be fixed or else you might have another BSOD in the future.
Since it cannot repair the corrupted system files, that means these files are being used & locked by some other processes currently running in the background.

We can try one more thing before you decide to restore to previous image.

  1. WIN+X and select Run then type: msconfig
  2. Select Boot TAB and put a tick on Safe boot then click Apply, OK
Restart your PC when prompted. This will boot Windows with minimum configuration and hopefully those corrupted system files are not being used & locked. Don't worry if your screen looks big and your internet is not working etc....

Open command prompt and run sfc again. If succeeded, then run msconfig again, untick the Safe Boot and reboot Windows.

Good point and it's nothing wrong with your suggestion but I also read that a lot of people are having problem to do a refresh or Reset.

Ok.

Let us see if sfc scan(safe mode) will fix the errors or not.

Reset/Refresh/clean install should be the last option :)

hello topgun, bagavan,
Thanks for the help. I did the safe boot but sfc still said it could nor repair certain errors.
As topgun said that it has to be repaired, otherwise I can expect problems in future, I am ready now for a clean install.
I was reading the tutorials about clean install, however there was one thing I was not clear about and I posted that question in following post:
http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/16672-loading-sata-drivers-during-setup.html

Can you please have a look at that question and let me know if I always should preload drivers, or only if the drive is not recognized.

Yes, you can take Bagavan's advice or you could start it fresh with installation media. After you install a fresh copy, run windows update then run sfc again before to make an image backup.
