I am getting a BSOD every time when Windows 8 64 bit comes out of sleep with a DPC.Watchdog_Violation error. Nothing I have done or a third level MS Support person has done has found the supposed driver that is causing the problem. I have attached files using your Diagnostic Tool to help. This started after upgrading to Windows 8.

Thanks.

Did have an Adaptec 2405 RAID card but because of BSODs coming out of Sleep Mode, it was replaced with a LSI 9271-4i RAID card which resolved the issue.

Thanks! I updated the Adaptec 2405 controller with the latest drivers (dated May 18, 2012 v5.2.0.19076, on their Website) but it didn't help. Adaptec didn't have any driver listed for Windows 8 so it appears that Adaptec needs to get going and make a driver that works with the latest Windows OS.

I did some searching on Adaptec's Website and found at: What Adaptec products are supported in Windows 8 and Server 2012? that they don't have a driver yet but they say that one is planned. They say that one is on the Windows 8 server CD but I suppose it won't work for Windows 8 Professional.

There is a known issue, some systems crash when Hybrid Sleep is enabled.

Sleep crashes possibly can be stopped by disabling Hybrid Sleep.
Control Panel > Power Options > Change When the Computer Sleeps > Change Advanced Power Settings >
Expand 'Sleep', then 'Allow hybrid sleep', click on 'Setting' and change to 'Off'.
Test your sleep function.

I'm gonna make a SWAG here (Scientific Wild-A**ed Guess) and blame this on AMD Overdrive (for an ATI video card).

The raw stack has lot's of storage driver's being blamed, along with the HAL being involved - but there's one lone video driver being blamed. Interestingly enough, it's an nVidia display driver (not an ATI driver).

So, even though there's an nVidia card installed, there's ATI video stuff installed. Please uninstall all of it, then check to make sure that the AODDriver2.sys is uninstalled:
aoddriver4.01 AODDriver4.01 \??\d:\program files (x86)\amd\overdrive\amd64\aoddriver2.sys Kernel Driver Yes Manual Running OK Normal No Yes
DO NOT delete the file, it may make the system unbootable! Only use the uninstaller to remove it. If the uninstaller isn't present, please post back and we'll provide suggestions on how to safely remove it.

Hybrid Sleep was already disabled on the computer.

I uninstalled AMD Overdrive and installed the latest version of AMD Overdrive which is Windows 8 compatible. I never had run the program before the test files were generated and wouldn't think any of the AMD Overdrive files would be in use at boot time. I still get the BSOD when waking the computer out of Sleep Mode.

The third level MS Support person thinks it is probably the Adaptec driver. We'll have to wait for Adaptec to make a driver that is Windows 8 compatible to see if it resolves the DPC error.

Thanks.

No, I am still waiting on Adaptec to resolve this issue. A 3rd level MS Support Engineer thinks the BSOD is probably caused by the Adaptec controller driver. Here is his message: "As requested, I would like to inform you that as per the below mentioned link Windows 8 DVD contain the generic driver for Adaptec RAID 2405.

What Adaptec products are supported in Windows 8 and Server 2012?

They have planned the updated driver soon and Microsoft is not responsible for hardware drivers."

Interestingly, Adaptec Support first told me basically that the drivers were on the Windows 8 disk and that I probably needed to somehow extract them from a cab. Later, a Support person told me basically that the Sleep function is not guaranteed to work after Windows XP! I told them that it worked with Windows 7. I believe they said that the embedded driver doesn't support Sleep mode and that they were not going to make a Windows 8 driver that would.

Later, I received this message from Adaptec: "I spoke with engineering and they expected the Windows sleep function to work corrected with both your Series 2 & Series 5 controllers. Please pull a support log from either of the systems for their review." The issue was eventually escalated to Engineering at Adaptec recently and they are hopefully working on it. I have heard nothing from them after sending them a requested support.log file earlier this week. Also, my impression is that the their latest ASM program is not totally Windows 8 compatible since a tab that was supposed to be visible was not. In order for ASM to generate all of the necessary files in the support.log file Adaptec requested, I had to uninstall it and reinstall it after upgrading from Windows 7 Pro 64 bit to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. Adaptec has had quite a while to make their drivers totally compatible with Windows 8.

I also have another computer with a 5805 controller using Windows 7 I would like to upgrade to Windows 8 but I'm going to wait until this issue gets resolved.

I thought I would give an update as for how things are going. I was told eventually by Adaptec that they could not replicate the issue and the case was closed and Microsoft has refused to respond. Just recently, a 3rd level ASUS Support person did a test with the same motherboard (Sabertooth 990FX R2.0) and found that the issue is related to the Adaptec 2405 RAID card. The video is at: Adaptec 2405 Sabertooth 990FX R2 test - YouTube. (The audio is rather low.)

There was no issue with Windows 8 installed to a hard drive attached to an onboard SATA port but there was when Windows was installed on a hard drive connected to the Adaptec 2405 RAID card. I understood the 3rd level ASUS Support person to say that the test results were the same when using the Rev 1 Sabertooth 990FX board. I have brought this to Adaptec's attention today so I hope that finally this can be resolved soon.

Another update. I was told by Adaptec Support that they had drivers for my card but hadn't posted them around one month ago. Approximately two weeks later, Adaptec Support said that they would not release new drivers for Windows 8 and that the info on their Website at: What Adaptec products are supported in Windows 8 and Server 2012? was incorrect and that it would be changed, I understood. About two weeks later, the incorrect info is still posted.

To solve the BSOD coming out of Sleep Mode, with the help of an ASUS 3rd level Support person, I decided to forget Adaptec and purchase another RAID card from another company. I purchased an LSI 9271-4i, and after setting it up and restoring the image I made, the issue of getting a BSOD coming out of Sleep Mode was finally resolved. LSI does have Windows 8 drivers for the card which I believe, started to be sold last year. According to ASUS there was an incompatibility between the Adaptec card and the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX Rev 1 and Rev 2 motherboards (which could have been resolved if Adaptec would have supplied updated Windows drivers).

I would like to make the comment that the LSI 9271-4i has a known issue of the drive activity headers not working. LSI is looking into the issue.
