Solved BSOD everytime you boot into Windows, Can't get into OS.

Hi, I am dual booting Windows 8 and Windows 7 on separate partitions on my hard drive, so Windows 7 is working perfectly. So I am taking out the consideration of hardware failure since this is only happening to Windows 8. Ever since a Windows Update took place a few nights ago, it is impossible to boot into Windows 8 or boot into safe mode. I tried System Restore but my system didn't create any restore points -.- So I'm thinking Windows installed some sort of driver that is making an error every time it loads the OS. BSOD code is: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL... Here is the dumps. Please someone help me. :( Thank you!

Uninstall your AVG antivirus. use the built in windows defender instead.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an

caused by drivers using improper addresses.

Okay, how do I do that if I cant get in the OS though? Could I just delete the AVG folder on the partition when I'm in Windows 7?

Go into Win7
Go to the Win8 Windows\System32\drivers directory
Rename avgwfpa.sys to avgwfpa.BAD (do not delete it as you may need it if this doesn't work)
Then attempt to boot into Windows 8.

If you get into Win8, IMMEDIATELY uninstall AVG
If you don't get in, post back for other things to try.

Nope, doesn't work unfortunately. :( After the windows logo boot screen it just goes into a black screen. Not even a blue screen error this time.

All of this refers to the Win8 drive/files - DO NOT do this to the Win7 files!!!!

Scan the Win8 drive for malware. Here's a list of free scans (I don't know how many are Win8 compatible - but the bootable disks should work OK): Free Online AntiMalware Resources

Then backup anything that you want to save from the Win8 installation (as some of the following things can really mess up a Windows installation!).

Try renaming all avg.... driver files to .BAD
Then try renaming the AVG directories to something else (that's easy to reset - in case it doesn't boot at all)
Search the Win8 drive for avg*.* and rename all of the stuff to something easily reset.

How familiar are you with the registry and remote mounting of registry hives? If you are, then you can go in and stop the AVG from loading. If you do try this, make sure to backup the registry before trying it.

Okay will do, I will do all of those and then post back here. I really am not that familiar with the registry except doing basic things with it.

Okay.. scan was okay, renamed all the files to .BAD, and renamed the AVG directory in Program Files(x86) to AVGBAD. Still.. Black screen after Windows 8 boot screen. So I guess going through the registry might do..

Have you tried Safe Mode after doing any of the changes?

Here's links on how to remotely mount a registry: https://www.google.com/search?q=rem...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Once that's done, the first step is to make a backup of those files (in case something goes awry while editing them).

Then you search through the registry for entries that run AVG or it's services and delete or disable them.

I'm thinking that this is gonna take a lot of time and research on your part. Several years ago another tech and I each spent 4 hours digging through a customer's registry to remove traces of another anti-virus program. While we were successful, I also figure that we were awfully lucky not to have irreparably broken the registry while deleting stuff.

So, the alternative is to:
- backup your data from the Win8 partition
- wipe the partition that Win8 is installed on (use KillDisk or DBAN - both are free with an internet search)
- reinstall Windows clean (not adding any 3rd party programs)
- fix any issues in Device Manager
- install ALL Windows Updates.

Then test and ensure the problem is fixed. If it is, then you can start adding 3rd party programs.

Safe mode will not work at all. Black screen just appears when I choose it. Hmmmmmm well, that really really sucks ahahah. I didn't know an antivirus can potentially brick your OS. Well i'll do some research and if nothing goes right, i'll just wipe that partition and start over again. I'll post back here probably in 24 hours. :)

I'm thinking that that'll be the best solution for you. We've literally spent weeks at work trying to solve black screen problems - only to have to resort to wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Now we just try System Restore - and if it doesn't work we suggest a Backup/Wipe/and reinstall of Windows.

Good luck!

Well... I just wiped the parition and reinstalled Windows 8 back on it. Everything is fine as it should be hahah :p Now... what antivirus works with Windows 8 so far?? As AVG seems to have issues with it. I really dont trust Windows Defender lol.

If you're looking to pay for something, we sell a lot of Kaspersky at work.
I've been using the built-in Windows Defender and haven't had a problem with it.
Avira and Avast are other free offerings.

I doubt your issue was caused by your virus software. I would disable automatic updates. Lots of people are having issues where Windows 8 won't reboot after updates. Desperately in need of a major fix pack.
