    bsod on shutdown II

I have had an ongoing thread, on this forum, for a month or more regarding stop screens only when shutting down from the power button from Settings on the charms screen. I will jump to the point w/o much preliminary info as you can read, under the user name "payhel", all that I have done to this point.

Generally, I would update a driver, uninstall some software, reinstall a driver, re-seat a piece of hardware, replace a piece of hardware and the stop screens would go away for a week or two, then bam, a stop screen, on shutdown, out of nowhere. I have run the verifier, all of Dell's diagnostic scans, and finally Dell support gave up and claims it is a Microsoft problem.

While browsing the tutorials here on the forum, today, I downloaded the "force shut down button" and installed it. Used the button and the computer shutdown w/o a stop screen. Also, when I shutdown the computer normally, no stop screen. I have had no stop screens since the install of the button. My question is, what does the eightforums "force shut down button" do that the regular win 8 power button does not? And why would the use of the eightforums shut down button stop the persistent stop screens from happening during a regular win 8 shutdown? Can the stop screen problem be parsed out from differences between the two different shutdowns?

Where did you get the "Force Shutdown" thing from? Please provide a link to the post where it is.
The forced shutdown may crash an application when shutting down. If this is the application that causes the BSOD's, then it may be forced to crash before it can crash other components.

Yes, it may be possible to parse it out from the 2 different shutdowns.
I'd suggest that you contact a moderator to move this post back with the rest of your posts, and that way others can see this situation and assist you in figuring out what's causing this.

Called instant shutdown not forced: Shut Down Shortcut - Create in Windows 8
I had posted to the old thread w/o any responses as it was marked solved, so started a new one, moderators can move the thread as they like.

    Thanks

    stop screen not bsod

Decided to google stop screen on shutdown instead of bsod and the second link was: Fix Windows 8 Restart and Shutdown Problems by Disabling “Hybrid Shutdown” Feature - Tweaking with Vishal this may be, after all this time and work, a "you've got to be kidding me" moment. Maybe, eightforums should add a stop screen category as stop screens seem only to be a win 8 process and since no error is given is different than a bsod?

Stop screen is the same as BSOD.
The Blue Screen Of Death refers to the blue background, the Stop Code designates the error that caused the system to crash.

Check the setting for your power button.

There appears to be two different colored screens, the usual dark blue screen with a stop code, then the one I have been getting a powder blue screen no code just a goofy sad faced emoticon and a statement that the computer has encountered an error and will restart. I read where someone was calling it a stop screen which seemed appropriate.

Yes, I have turned off hybrid and the thing is shutting down in about 3 to 7 seconds w/o the powder blue screen. I have been here before, for a couple of weeks at a time, then back comes the screens. However, the thing seems to be shutting down with much less effort and way faster than ever before. So, will mark it solved if I get 3 weeks of proper shutdown.

Goofy blue screen is the "new" BSOD for Win8, the darker blue screens are from Win7 and earlier

A BSOD is also known by many other names:
    - Blue Screen of Death (hence the BSOD acronym)
    - STOP error
    - Crash dump
    - Memory dump
    - Bug Check
    - BCCode

Thanks for taking the time to explain your take on the infamous screens of death. I used your site when I was continually running the verifier and was the first place I found PxH1pa64.sys and how to neutralize it. I ended up having to track it down in the registry and deleting it in a low filter to get my blu-ray back.

This is the 3rd day after un-checking the hybrid shutdown and still no stop screens. The computer seems to shutdown effortlessly. If this is the fix it may be worth some discussion on a first when the stop screen appears.

Thanks again for the info and the very good troubleshooting site.

Update from Nov2012: Since un-checking the Win 8 hybrid shutdown option in November I have not had one single BSOD. May be a good to deselect the option prior to initiation of any BSOD troubleshooting. It would have saved me a month.

Isn't this a workaround though? You'd wand to be able to use a Windows feature.
