Solved Windows 8 Freezes and Mouse Vanishes

I've recently installed Windows 8 Pro (32 bit) on an ASUS X5DIN laptop which was previously running Windows 7 Home Premium. At random (but frequent) intervals, the computer will freeze entirely, with the cursor disappearing and any audio getting stuck in a loop. The laptop doesn't respond to any input and the only thing that can be done is to hold the power button to turn it off.

I've tried disabling dynamic ticks, enabling Hyper-V, fixing an issue with a missing co-processor driver, updating audio, touchpad and graphics drivers and reinstalling ASUS ATK utilities, none of which have any effect on stopping the problem. I've seen a few similar threads here and on other forums, but they contained generally personalised information for the user. Is there anything I can upload to help fix the issue, or any suggestions for what could be done?

One thing to note is that ASUS don't seem to supply Windows 8 drivers, so the driver updates I've applied are actually Windows 7 ones. (From here ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download K50IN ).

I cant help you, but I have an Asus laptop too and I had this exact issue with Windows 8 Consumer Preview and nobody never really knew why it happened so I ended up going back to Windows 7. Now i've recently returned to Win8 but this time its the full retail version that is supposed to be stable. First I had these freezing problems again and I did a refresh and it continued for a while but then the issue just vanished and it ran well for several weeks until i tried installing Comodo. After i had installed it, it asked me to reboot the system and after the computer rebooted there was only a black screen after login (you can read my thread called "Black Screen" for more on this issue if you want to). After there was no fix to be found i ended up refreshing my pc again and now I have this exact same freezing issue AGAIN and its driving me nuts! So i hope somebody finds a fix for you and what causes it because it could help me too but i really really doubt it. As I said i used to have this problem on Consumer Preview and i had a thread for it here about 6 months ago and it never got solved.

Please provide this info (even though you're not experiencing BSODs): https://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cr...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html
The reports may give us a clue as to what's happening.

While waiting for a reply, please ensure that you have all Windows Updates (run it repeatedly and reboot in between tries).
Also, try these free diagnostics as you are able: Hardware Diagnostics

I've attached the diagnostic tool zip file to this post, I'll try running the free diagnostics you linked later on, thanks.

Well it seems that you did have a BSOD back on 12 December.
It was a STOP 0x116 error, so please start with the troubleshooting that's detailed here: Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117

Please update these older drivers (this is very important). Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Lot's of unexplained shutdowns without any reason given. Have you been powering the system off by holding the power button down? If not, then we have to suspect a hardware problem.

Thanks for the in depth advice, I'll run through it all tomorrow. I imagine that I'll have to just uninstall most of the problem drivers as Asus don't seem to have any Windows 8 versions, and the ones I'm using are all (or mostly) the latest Win7 versions.

The unexplained shutdowns are all from holding the power button down, as it's the only way to turn the computer off when the crash occurs.

I haven't actually had any crashes today, after a reasonable period of use, but yesterday it was freezing up every 15mins or so and I haven't changed anything, so I assume it's just random, which might make it hard to tell if the fixes have totally worked, but I'll post here once I've followed your instructions (or if I need more help).

We sometimes get freezes/black screen errors after fixing BSOD's. I tend to think that they are related to the problem that's occurring, and that the BSOD fix was only ½ of the problem. In other words, there's problems between 2 different things that were causing the BSOD's - and fixing one of them removed the BSOD problem, but not the freezing/black screen issue.

Most often we fix these by a more in-depth look at the reports (mostly the MSINFO32 and Event Viewer reports) - but occasionally it's done by reinstalling Windows.

Good luck!

I was having a similar problem (I think). Using Windows 8 release preview, no problems, and upgraded to Pro shortly after release. Agian no problems until a few days ago. Started occasionally, and then became an issue every time I logged on. Reinstalled Windows, sure it would solve it, but no - a repeat! Made Windows 8 pretty much inoperable.

Followed the advice and link mentioned on another post and so far it seems to have solved the problem (fingers crossed!). Worked on my machine in two separate sessions for over an hour each time, no freeze.

Basically disabled the dynamic tick.

Run an elevated command prompt (go into Task Manager, hold down ctrl key and the click on "file" and "run new task")
Alternative is to open power user tasks menu and then choose the "command prompt admin" option.

Then run this script

bcdedit/set disabledynamictick yes

Details are here Hotfix available for Windows 8 freezing issues Within Windows

It seems to have done the trick so far.

Hope it remains so, and hope it helps others (note this fix will affect battery life but hey, if it means you can actually work on your computer then it's a no-brainer!

Computer Freeze and Mouse Disappears

I recently updated my computer from Win 7 to Win 8. My computer now freezes and becomes unresponsive, forcing a hard restart (pulling the battery out).

If someone could help me out, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

pga3mh - please start your own topic so that your issue can get the individual attention that it deserves.

You have no Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 40 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Post the results (and the report that you uploaded here) in your new topic and someone will be along shortly to give it a look at.

My mouse problem is slightly different than what has been posted. Over the summer, my Vista PC started exhibiting problems, so I quickly bought a new system online. It is only a modest system, but it works well and it is reliable, which is what I need for university work. However, every time the system shuts down, the mouse disappears. I simply unplug the usb cable and plug it in again. Simple solution. That being said, I wonder if there is a better solution. I have updated the optical mouse drivers to no avail. I could try another port but that doesn't seem logical. For you experts out there, what do you think?
