Solved Frequent BSOD - Various Causes

I've been encountering BSODs on a semi-regular basis. It started with my new machine some time last year w/ Win7x64. About 2mo ago I upgraded to Win8 and if anything, they've gotten more frequent. I've run memtest w/ no errors and various video card stress tests w/ no errors, and I'm not overclocking. I've updated drivers, flashed bios to no avail.

There are 2 diagnostics that are causing problems, and I'm not sure where to go from here:

1) I do get errors from running prime95 and my cpu heat goes > 90C while running the torture test, but is fine under normal load. Prime is finding errors (results file attached (results.txt))
2) With driver verifier enabled, I get BSOD's almost immediately when trying to sign into Windows.

Obviously the cpu heat is an issue, but since I haven't noticed it getting hot during normal usage, I wasn't sure if that's the root cause of all the bsod's. I've attached my win32 system info, bluescreenview of the dumps, the raw minidumps zipped, and the prime95 results.

Thanks in advance.

I did update my nvidia driver less than a week ago, but I'll uninstall nero and see what happens.

If I may ask, what pointed you in the direction of Nero?

It takes a couple to days to conclude if the problem has been totally solved. If it BSOD again upload those dumps

Hi,

The latest dump is difficult to conclude what is the reason behind the BSOD.

It just says windows driver fault.

Here is the next step we need to know which driver is causing the fault. So follow this

Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable - Windows 7 Forums

Post back the dumps

Here is the analysis of this dump

Just an update - I've had driver verifier enabled for over 2 days now without a crash. I did update my via audio driver as well so not sure if that was related.

If driver verifier has not made your computer crash then drivers are not at fault

If driver verifier has not made your computer crash then drivers are not at fault
In most cases this is correct. We troubleshoot BSOD's by ruling out 3rd party drivers, then hardware problems, then Windows problems - as that's the order that they're most likely to occur.

Numerous different BSOD error codes and different causes blamed are indicative of low-level drivers or hardware problems.
There are indications that there may also be an issue with your Norton/Symantec protection. Please do this:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- download a free anti-virus for testing purposes: Free AntiVirus
- un-install the Norton from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of Norton using this free tool: http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN
- IMMEDIATELY install and update the free anti-virus, then check to ensure that the Windows Firewall is turned on.
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's
NOTE: NEVER run more than 1 anti-virus, firewall, Internet Security/Security Center application at the same time.

The results.txt file points to hardware errors. I presume that this is the results of Prime95, so the errors point to (most likely) a problem with:
- RAM
- CPU Cache
- memory controller (on your motherboard)

Run MemTest86 according to these instructions: Memory Diagnostics
Run the CPU stress tests (several of them) from the last part of this page: Additional Hardware Diagnostics

Then, if you still haven't isolated what's at fault, then try the different Prime95 tests here: Prime95
First read everything there, then run the Blend, Small FFT's, and Large FFT's tests as described. The time between errors will help to figure out what's to blame here.

    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!
    Computer type
    Laptop
    System Manufacturer/Model
    Samsung/NP780
    CPU
Came with the laptop (i7 of some sort)
    Motherboard
Pretty sure that it has one, but haven't checked inside the case!
    Memory
upgraded to 12 gB from 8 gB
    Graphics Card(s)
has switchable - Intel/ATI - Used wrong drivers, now ATI card is inop :( Will have to fix it soon!
    Sound Card
I'm nearly deaf, so this isn't used often
    Monitor(s) Displays
Touchscreen on laptop/32" Toshiba on HDMI (laid the Sharp TV on a mouse and cracked the screen!)
    Screen Resolution
    800x600
    Hard Drives
One Samsung 1tB drive - 5400 rpm. Gonna switch to a 7200/10000 rpm or an SSD (if I can find $500 for a 1tB SSD!)
    - Switched to 500 gB Samsung 840 series SSD - WOW!!!
    PSU
Why do we ask this for laptops?
    Case
Silver with a neat Samsung logo
    Cooling
sub-par, gotta get around to working on it soon Worked on it - still sub-par! :(
    Keyboard
Microsoft Natural - the same one I've used since it orignally came out around 1995
    Mouse
    no Mouse - Trackball!!!!
    Internet Speed
too slow when I'm waiting for a download to finish
    Browser
Yes, I use this (Firefox mostly, w/IE next most)
    Antivirus
    Windows Defender and Windows Firewall
    Other Info
    I'm handsome and a snappy dresser :0)
So I re-ran memtest, and the prime95 tests and they're all passing. I cleaned out the inside and remounted my heat sync and am no longer noticing high 80+ degree cores. The blue screens have ceased as well, so I'm concluding it was a cooling issue on the processor. If this doesn't make sense, or you have a better idea, please do let me know.
