Solved No metro, no desktop

I was playing Skyrim [had been playing around with mods] and decided that I wanted to give my computer a break, so turned it off and wandered away for a bit, I returned to turn my computer on and found that the metro start screen was completely black. I couldn't interact with it in any way at all: no right click, left click or any of the other clicks. I tried using Windows D to access the desktop but nothing happened.

I'm able to access Task Manager with Ctrl Alt Dlt and can do pretty much everything that I'd want to using it, just incredibly slowly. Under the Disk Usage it reports >80% consistently, despite the fact that nothing else is (so far as I can tell) running. In the startup tab it reads something along the lines of, in regards to impact on startup performance, "no measurements" - contrasting to what it said the last time my system was turned on. I looked through the active processes and found none of the applications listed in the startup tab were running, including AMD Catalyst, I tried manually starting it up but it wouldn't load. When I open up the Task Manager it sits on a black background, if I put my cursor at the top of the screen it doesn't change to the hand and I can't pull the desktop anywhere.

I've just run a system restore to a point two days ago and there has been no change. I presently have it running in safe mode doing a full Malwarebytes scan though remain doubtful. I've also tried a 'sfc /scannow' thingy.
Any help much appreciated, thanks!
Josh.

EDIT: Malwarebytes scan returned nothing

Hello there! Welcome to EF!

Under Task Manager (Detail view) what is the process or service that's taking up all the resources? But it sounds like User Profile issue though. Create a new Windows Administrator and see if you're having the same problem with it. Did the SFC scan reported any errors?

Thanks for the reply, I've set up a new account and everything works fine - can I fix my old account or is there an easy way of transferring my files? The SFC scan said that it fixed errors but didn't give any specific details and Disk Usage is back down to normal on the new account.

Document data can be transferred just by copy them from C:\Users\User name\Doucments to C:\Users\new username\Douments but it's hard to copy over the settings.
