Win 8 pro won't boot! Stalls at black screen with cursor

Hi I desperately need help! :/
The last time I used my pc I installed a couple of games, uninstalled pokki cos it seemed too resource hungry, used jet drive to defrag the whole hd in deepest mode. I tried to install Asia thermal reader manually cos it wasn't installing from the disc that came with my saber tooth 990fx mobo after installing the win 8 updated version. Think it said cant install on this version of windows although it did install when I'd just upgraded to win 8(? Weird!). I think windows had installed a few updates when it shut down or maybe the restart before. All I know is I'd left jet drive doing its thing (which claims to be win 8 compatible) and I'd told it to shut down when finished. I came back to my pc later and the screen was on the start screen waiting for me to click a button so it wud open the login section. This suggests it restarted instead of shutting down or restarted cos it crashed during defragging?
I clicked so I cud log in and it was unresponsive. Cudnt press Ctrl-alt-del or anything so had to reset. It rebooted and went to windows icon and spinny balls started coming up but then paused and pc wud boot no further.

I put win disc in n chose to repair hd but it said it cudnt repair(!). I opened up command prompt n I'd disk check which found nothing, I did a full disk check (rechecking for bad sectors, etc and repairing offline) n it found nothing still. I did sfc /scannow n it said some files were corrupted n it had repaired them. I rebooted n now it doesn't even get to win icon just stays at black screen with text cursor on (not blinking cursor). I just don't know what to do!!!....

I've seen some ideas like turning off dynamic ticks (my sea gate 3tb hd won't update firmware to latest and I'm not sure it's most reliable as I've had to repair it a couple of times so far- cause being hd or win 8?, hd light sometimes stays on for ages n I get freezes for a time intermittently).
Other ideas were turning off fast startup but haven't tried either of these ideas yet. Also booting in safe mode but don't know how to do that when pc doesn't boot very far into windows. Tried to revert to restore point from win disc but needs to be done from hd with win on! ( a dumb idea considering I can't boot to win on hd!).

Win 7 used to come up with screen saying boot safe mode, normal, repair or restore point and I'd try a few n it wud get going again quickly n just work! Win 8 is pants at helping users get up n running again quickly if it relies on pc being able to get so far into windows system before u can choose all these options!

Please help, I hope all this makes sense but if not please query things n ill try to explain better

    Thank you everyone in advance,

    Steve

Sounds like your hard drive partition might be corrupt, or deleted. You did a upgrade to keep all your files. But if your disk failed, your those files are lost. I would try a fresh install onto the Drive after a format. Next time if anything back up your files onto a removable hdd.

It's brand new hd so I'm hoping there are no problems with it. I want to try and update the firmware on it but couldn't do it thru windows so have to burn it to disc to do it.

Sorry about spelling cos if my crappy iPhone spell checker. It was the asus thermal reader. On the win 8 update of the asus suite software it didn't install this app so I was trying to install it from the older version on disc that came with my mobo as I wouldn't have a way of controlling fans and monitoring system temps otherwise. I ended up installing speedfan before my pc cocked up n that was doing the job. I glimpsed a thread about asus fan control not working properly with win 8 so that may be the problem.

How do I boot in safe mode without being able to set it thru windows?

I did have a system image backup (via windows backup app) on the second partition of te same drive (I know it's not best practice but I haven't got another drive yet n can't afford it at the mo). The backup is a couple of weeks out of date but better than nothing. I have installed soooo many games and downloaded loads of updates and steam purchased games that I really don't wanna do a fresh install if I can get around it.

Any thoughts, Tutes or advice is welcome anyone (please)

Hello, i might have a similiar issue. I just restarted my pc coz it felt a bit slo, it was running whole day almost. So when I was turning it off it said Update and shut down or something with similiar meaning. Now when I try to turn it on, it boots the bios, then the windows screen with new win 8 logo and the spinning wheel, and after that there is blank screen, while the sceen continues to turn on ans off, still just blank.

Yeah that sounds like my scenario. I couldn't remember exactly until you said to be honest cos it was a while ago n my life is pretty hectic at the mo. So.... More to the point has anyone got a clue what's happened and how to fix it?

Well what I managed to do is use the system restore point, I booted from USB my win 8 installation and run the restore, I didn't lose any data, just the software was uninstalled up to the point of the restore point, which is kinda what everybody wants. After that everything worked, of course I had to install all the SW from the scratch. I disabled windows update immediately because apparently some of their update caused all of this. Also one remain of this mishap is that after booting the system, that is after the win logo and before the welcome screen it goes into blank screen for about 20 sec, what started to occur after the breakdown, so I will be doing one more clear install later this week and I hope I get rid of the 20 sec blank screen coz for 1) its annoying 2) I'm having little heart attacks for not knowing if its gonna boot at all and 3) it simply bothers me the system doesn't work as it should. Windows update will probably stay disabled for good, or at least until there will be some fix of this particular problem. Other than that I cant give any more useful info, however I will post here when I do the clear install to inform about the 20 sec blank screen issue.

    Regards,

Ok roman. Thanks for ur input. I have managed to get into windows now. The problem being that I was booting the win 8 DVD (that I'd burnt from the downloaded file) via a USB DVD drive (don't know if that's the problem?) but after I copied the files to a USB drive and booted I went to repair and actually cud choose my win 8 system (before it was saying I needed to boot up from the hd (I think) and choose the system I wanted to repair as tho It couldn't identify it from booting from a DVD!). It repaired the hd and then booted into windows! I'm currently backing up my system partition. Only problem I have now is the same as you - I have to wait for windows to get on with loading into the login screen after that screen with the win icon except I waited for about two mins. I'm wondering if its waiting for something to respond before it continues (maybe Internet or another network based thing. Maybe it times out before it will continue?)
Or perhaps that is that dynamic tick option that is the cause?

I'm glad that you managed to fix it up. I have no experience with USB DVD drives (DVD mechanic connected via USB port right?) so I'm not able to say if that was the issue but I'd say it should have been no problem as long as you set the system to boot via that device (ie. F12 or similar on bios screen). I have no idea though what is causing the black screen after win loading screen, but I hope it is no deep rooted s**t on hdd or registers and I hope It gets fixed with a clean install. You can try googling about the black screen maybe you will find out the cause, I don't have time for that right now, but maybe I will look into it later this week. I should have enough time on Wednesday, till then I will be using this restored version of system.

Yesterday, to my surprise, the problem has fixed itself, the black doesn't take anymore forever to load, it just goes right to the log in screen after the windows loads. So I am not doing a new install, seems everything is fine. It takes ~17 sec to start my computer now, what I find a great result since I have just a standard hdd.
