Strange boot problems (related to video card?)

Hello everybody,

Yesterday I installed windows 8 on my 4 year old Acer Aspire 5920G laptop (still runs many recent games decently), dual booted with Vista (OEM) and W7.
W8 was installed succesfully and it worked as it should, but when I let the system do a performance rating the screen went black, the laptop restarted once or twice and from then on only trippy colours were visible most of the time.
Sometimes these are visible directly after switching the laptop on, sometimes I see the Acer logo and the W8 logo when loading something or attempting auto repair.
F8 does not work (I doubt it ever did). F2 does work, but I think the boot setup is useless at this point. Trying to re-install W8 will result in the 'trippy' screen again after loading for 10 min, same goes for Ubuntu. I am unable to see how I can boot in another windows version at the moment.
When starting normally now I'm able to shut it down by pressing <esc> followed by <enter>, so I suspect everything functions normally beyond the screen. Also the activity led (of the disk I think) is burning a lot when this screen is visible.

Is this a solvable problem or is the videocard dead?

Thank you for your time :)
