Hello to all my forum friends and other members :D

Well, I signed up for an outlook.com account yesterday, in fact my first ever Microsoft account in my life, LOL!!

I have used Gmail, Yahoo! mail and now outlook. Compared to the other mail providers, outlook is just an eye-candy. It was a love at first sight. It was (is) a buttery smooth using experience for me. Its clean, simplified and yet feature rich. Loving the UI :dinesh:

So, what do you guys think? Loving it too? Or is it a different story at your end?

Give your all precious vote!!! And let us know your reasons behind it too!!

PS:
A small request, only vote and post your opinions after using outlook.com, kindly don't go by what the folks are saying and what tech magazines and sites are saying.
Thanks for voting and sharing your views!!

It's a solid webmail client, but nothing exceptional. I use it and it works fine, but it's got nothing crazy awesome. Also, gmail has more features, but I've had a hotmail account for long enough, so I'm not switching.

Hi Arpan. Thanks for the thread. :) Seems like you are very excited about Outlook.com.

I signed up and have had a Live account (Live Plus at first) since Vista days if I remember correctly. What's it been? 11 or 12 years now? It has always been reliable and has always had some very nice features. I have one for personal use and one for business. Lately that has been added into my MS account. In fact, they have added all accounts within that one -> Live, MSDN, TechNet, SkyDrive, and the likes. I never did use it on the "social" part of it as they desperately tried to get users to do. It could have been bigger than FaceBook.

I'll surely be lQQking into this and then come back to vote.

Signed up for two Outlook.com accounts, both with the same user names so I can later ditch my Live account. Already switched over from @hotmail.com to @outlook.com. The main account will be switched over when I've decided on how much SkyDrive storage I need to pay for as I have a 25 amount grandfathered in for with Live. And of course, all the things I've signed up for with that account.

Overall, I bloody love using it! The UI is nothing like anything out there, the features I've come across makes things nicer to use. Fantastic job on Microsoft's behalf!

It's a web based email system. I don't find anything particularly impressive or lacking with it. I've already got my stuff setup with gmail, and I have my own domain name and Google apps setup....so I'm just staying there as there is nothing that compels me to make changes.

I understand what you are saying, pparks. Thanks for your response :)

I see you have voted Gmail. The question was, if you need a new mail account, what would you opt for. I didn't ask if you would switch to outlook.com. My point was that: If you are in need of a new mail account, you would most probably want to go with the best out there in the market, right? So, in that case, which mail provider is your most preferred choice?

BTW, have you tried out outlook.com?

If i had to do it from scratch, starting right now, I would stick with gmail. For $10 a year, I register my own domain name, and Google apps is free and I can have unique email addresses at my own @domain.com for myself, wife, kids, spam accounts, etc.

This also works great when you are evaluating software for business and they email you a demo. Some places won't sent to @gmail.com as it's a personal email and they intend their software for business. With my own domain name, @myownname.com....the businesses don't know that it's simply gmail and they go ahead and accept it as a valid email address.

BTW, have you tried out outlook.com?
Yes, I switched over my Live account (old @hotmail.com) to the new Outlook.com as soon as it was available.

Haven't heard much about outlook.com.
I have around 6 emails account at windowslive, hotmail, gmail, yahoo, solonet (local), and company website provided by squirrelmail. I left MS outlook since I found my blackBerry acount is more aggressive in providing instant notification since 3 years ago.
Will take a closer look at outlook.com anytime sooner.

Kevin.

Based on my experience with our customers that use it, outlook.com is good--especially for Win 8 users. I expect it will only get better.

Downside is that it is confused with Outlook the program, which most people (who haven't had to use it in the corporate world) want nothing to do with. Contacts turned into People: confusing and very annoying if you don't already know to click the ^. Also the contacts import is pathetic for a company that has had good importing capabilities for 20 years.

The advertising isn't as bad as gmail. Will there be a (paid) version without ads?

The biggest negative is support. Most people I deal with will pay a few bucks for one of the email services with highly responsive (including phone) support.

And I highly agree with the suggestion to get/use your own domain for your email.

Yes but the distinction is web based email versus email client, e.g., Essentials does not run on Android...

Indeed. Everyone feels this way. And yet, my customers who do the change universally say that it wasn't so bad. You do want to keep the old address around for a long while to catch the stragglers (the ones you want!).

The case where you absolutely do not want to change email address is a business with a lot invested in advertising the address. That is why, for a business, you must get your own domain. It is also well worthwhile for an individual/family. And you can still use outlook.com as your interface to that email.

But if you do not have your own domain name, then for many reasons I think it is better to have an outlook.com address than gmail.com or the others that are well known and also used by the less reputable.

I managed to get both my GMail and RoadRunner e-mail names with my real name, no numbers or anything else so they're really simple for someone to remember. They just work so I leave 'em alone. I do have an Outlook.COM e-mail address (through my old hotmail address) but I just haven't gotten 'round to it yet.

Update: I was able to rename my Hotmail address to the Outlook domain without changing the name so that was easy enough! Maybe I'll start using that instead of GMail.

Another benefit: all those addresses that you wanted but were taken on other domains may still be available at outlook.com! Get yours now!

It will be interesting to see how outlook.com evolves. Maybe they will make it more universally useful and go after the good things about gmail without the... not so good things (privacy).
