Startup Issue

Not entirely sure if this is the correct thread to post this on, but my problem is when i boot up Windows 8, it automatically starts Bing search on my default browser [whether it be Chrome or IE]. Is there a way to disable bing search on startup?

I should also note that i haven't installed any Bing related apps. At least to my knowledge.

For Chrome, open the setting on most upper right. on "On Startup" you may choose one of threee buttons. You can even specify the default.

For IE. You can just open the internet option. On General tab you specify what it should do when IE starts.

Kevin, it isn't a homepage issue. It automatically loads your browser when Windows starts. I am having the same problem. It loads up the following URL: Bing which redirects to Bing. I have tried blocking the site in my "hosts" file. I have disabled just about every non-critical start-up process. It's driving me nuts, even though it's not a big deal. Someone please help us or at least confirm you're having the same problem to validate us.

Sorry for not being clear in catching the idea.
Honestly I haven't come across those issue this far. Logically it happens by some ways.
It could be by accidentally agreeing something during any program installation (often happens with ask.com though only for default search engine, etc). Or any program that add url to startup sequence.

Did you check the program and features in control panel? Also try to open MSconfig and see the service and startup tab if there is something you can suspect as one that loading Bing URL. You might also want to check the startup folder on start menu folder to make sure it's clean.

Ignore this if you already did it.

I am having exactly this same problem. As soon as I boot up, my default browser loads the Bing search page. The home page settings in all of my browsers (Firefox 17.0.1, Opera12.11, and Internet Explorer 10) are all set to another search provider in the internet options. I have been unable to stop Bing search from automatically loading for several weeks now. Additional info: This does not happen when I start my browser. It loads my browser without my intervention, and loads the search page. I have checked the start up folder, delayed start up settings and services, and so far nothing to indicate why this behavior occurs. I also considered that it might be some form of malware causing it, but it has not been detected by Norton Internet Security or Malwarebytes during full system scans. Kind of at the end of my wits on this one.

Did anyone come up with anything that might be causing the behavior?

Another place you might want to check is the Scheduler since you can setup the scheduler to run a program after Login.

Thank you for responding. I will give it a try. I just booted up, and this Bing search page just popped up again. I will let you know about whether your suggestion was successful.

Do you, by chance, happen to have Bing Desktop installed? It is an optional update, but it may have been installed anyway depending on your update settings. You can, however, uninstall it in the same way as a normal program, via Programs and Features. Just click on Bing Desktop and uninstall it in the usual way.

I appreciate the response. I always do my updates manually because of just this sort of thing, and I have pointedly avoided loading Bing Desktop. I do still see it as an optional update in Windows update, but I have never loaded it, and it does not appear in my list of programs in Programs and Features.

I am beginning to suspect that this might have been the result of an installer somewhere, and am now actively searching through recently installed programs to see if their installers did this as some kind of additional load.

Thanks again for your suggestion, because everything helps to narrow this down. When I find out what it is, I will definitely post so that others aren't subject to this annoyance.

I suggest you download "Autoruns" from Microsoft from the link below and run it as Administrator

Autoruns for Windows

I use this program quite often to delete/disable all the unnecessary Services, Add-ons, BHOs, Updaters etc...

To make it easier to spot unwanted entries, click on Options -> Filter Options and hide Microsoft Entries
Change the font if the listing is too small to read.

To isolate the problem, look very close in Winlogon, Logon, Explorer, Internet Explorer, Schedules Tasks, Services and uncheck anything that you suspect

No matter where Bing came from it is a pain to remove.
I had to search C:\ drive (& all subfolders ) to find it all.
I had to give myself full control in the Properties box over each Bing thing to be able to remove it.
Except 1.
Bing News.
I put it in a folder on Desktop & compressed it in the properties window.
Dragged it to recycle bin & it was gone.
You might want to rename it before compressing it using the old 8/3 file naming system.

BINGisit.exe

Or whatever.
8.3
8 in the first string & 3 in the second.

When searching for Bing in C:\ drive use *.bing or name:bing or Name:*.bing

I had to remove them all one by one.
You will have to give yourself ownership & Adminitrator rights over them.Enable Inheritance too.
This is a pain in the ass but it works.
ALL my Bing is gone.:)

I would not do what you did. You might eliminate one problem and yet create other problems down the road....
The proper way is find out exactly where the problem is and fix it.

There are a lot of "Bing" things associated with the Metro Apps that you might break and also a proper way to do is to uninstall, not just remove.

Thank you for the Autoruns suggestion, topgundcp. So far I have implemented all of the suggestions, and have not yet been able to identify the source of the problem. There have been no obvious indications in any start up locations as to why this occurs. I mght also add (as a help to analysis) that there are times when it does not happen. I boot the system and wait, and everything loads as it should without the Bing browser window appearing. This is one of the things that is so daunting about it. Usually, I end up waiting for several boot cycles until I know if the last thing that I did had any effect. So far, no joy, but everyone's help is greatly appreciated.

I am currently investigating information that I found here: Windows 8 goes to Bing by itself all the time - Microsoft Community

Though it gets kind of technical, the short version involves disabling the Network List Service (netprofm). After determining that disabling it would not negatively impact my system, I began to consider this option, and am testing this now. However (and call me a nitpicker, I guess) I would like to know exactly why this works (if it does) and what entity or company is responsible for creating the behavior in the first place.

Interestingly, during my search for answers, I actually found a Youtube video that displays the behavior exactly. Unfortunately, it seems that the creator of the video (or the only poster) believes that the problem is related to OpenDNS. I did actually investigate this avenue, but OpenDNS is not being accessed by my system in any way that I am able to determine. Coupling this with the fact that the poster was unable to describe *how* OpenDNS would cause this (particularly with their own strident denials concerning pop up accusations against them), I think it might be a blind alley, though the video itself is visually instructive, proving that such a problem does exist and is replicated on other systems.

I will post the outcome of the aforementioned pursuit as I am able to determine success or failure. In the meantime, any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

No, Autorun is a Windows feature that allows executable files on a drive to be run automatically when that drive is accessed and this is one of the way hackers use to spread viruses into your PC. The feature works via a file named autorun.inf. When a drive is accessed, Windows checks for the presence of autorun.inf and, if found, follows the instructions contained within that file.

NOTE: The solution they have is not really a solution. If you open Services and double click on Network List Service then click on the dependencies tab, you'll see it will effect other services ie. HomeGroup Provider & Network Connected Devices Auto Setup, that will in turn effect other features. By default, this service is set to "manual", that means it will run when triggered by other services and that would explain why it does not happen all the time.

Ok, yes, I searched and turned up 8 instances of autorun.inf and used a text editor to read the entries. None of them appears to contain launch information for either the default browser or the bing search page. Still looking into this...
