    Windows Mail Anyone?

Maybe the Advanced Search isn't working properly but I can't find mention of anyone actually stating that they successfully got Windows Mail up and running in Windows 8 Release Preview. It's much the same method as with Windows 7 and, as I have no wish to use the Mail app as designed in Windows 8, was looking for the desktop-accessible method other than Outlook, so went searching online and came across this video: Install Windows Mail on Windows 8. - YouTube

I then followed the Windows 7 tutorial to enable the Windows Calendar link in Windows Mail and it all now works, except for one small thing, WM doesn't appear in default programs and I can't figure out how to wangle that.

Forgive me if I've missed something already published on these forums, but I failed to find it.

I'm beginning to feel less antagonistic towards Windows 8 now, except I still don't like the Metro-only choice for installing device drivers as I want some control over whether or not passkeys are used (as in BT keyboard for instance). But that's a whole other story.

Edit: Have managed to make WM the default after an extensive reading of this thread but read the whole thing as there are two registry fixes need and one is amended twice (warning - it's a long thread so read all posts): Solved Can't Make Windows Mail Default - Windows 7 Forums

I'd still be interested to hear if anyone else has it up and running.

I used the method shown from the link you provided to try and get Windows Mail to work in Windows 7. It did enable it to run and open Windows Mail. However, whenever I saved an email to desktop, then opened it on the desktop, all it did was open the Windows Mail main folder, not the email itself.

Can you offer any help on that? Or is that method only for Windows 8?

I followed the directions from the tutorial in the YouTube link in your initial post, and it all worked, except emails saved to the desktop wouldn't open. So I went to the tutorial in Windows 7 Forums and ran the WinMailEdit file from that tutorial and now emails saved to desktop do open OK. I didn't make it default because there were no other email clients. Would making it default have allowed reading of emails saved to desktop?

If the Metro Mail app had a search feature it would be perfect.

In successfully installed Windows Mail using the Youtube link method. I also used the referenced Reg fixes to ensure it was my default mail. I'm happy to have my favorite email client back for Win8 use.
