Moving mail from Vista to Windows 8.1

I bought a new Dell Inspiron with Windows 8.1 last week and using "Transfer my PC" I moved everything on to the new machine except for all my emails which failed to transfer. Anyone got any suggestions or advice?

What kind of email client, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc? No syncing service with the cloud?

Thanks Popeye. My email is ".....@eircom.net", so you will see that it is not a huge one like gmail or such but it is widely used here in Ireland and part of the largest telecoms provider Eircom. Hope this is what you need to know.

That is your email provider but you can still access it with a client like the ones I mentioned above. If they stay on your providers server then they will still be there if you upgrade. Do you have your provider's email interface options set to keep all emails until you delete them?

You simply access through your browser right?

Yes, I use the website but it's not as convenient . Two things have come to light. Firstly the version of Windows Mail I have will only work on Vista and is not compatible with Windows 8 - very strange! Secondly my email address uses a POP server for incoming mail but Windows 8 wants an IMAP server. I'll talk to Eircom to see if it's possible to change . Many thanks for your help. I'll let you know how I get on.

Microsoft options are now based around Outlook which is a commercial program, or the Windows Live Mail, which it would appear, is in the process of being phased out.

You may have better luck looking at an alternate desktop email client, The one I always suggest is Mozilla Thunderbird which is free and can, by the use of add-on options be customised to suit your needs - All for free

It will operate with either POP3 or IMAP protocols and can also run your schedules and calender

If you have an always on internet connection IMAP is the way to go as it controls the remote mail server from your system.

    Edit

FYI, Windows mail was phased out some years ago due to security concerns and replaced by windows Live mail

When Windows Vista came out it was announced that Outlook Express was discontinued and replaced by Windows Mail. Also available was Windows Live Mail, part of Windows Essentials. When Windows 7 came out there was no E-Mail Client installed but a number of the OEMs did include Windows Essentials on new computers. There is a Mail tile on Windows 8.1 but in my case it accesses Hotmail.com. If something like Outlook Express is still desired have a look at OE Classic, works on my Win8.1, there's a free version and a paid-for version [$24.95], I have the free version for my simpler needs. I use Windows Live Mail 2012 part of the Windows Essentials package with Windows 8.1.
It does IMAP and POP and you can also Import messages from Outlook Express 6 (Win XP) or Windows Mail (Vista).

Thanks Helmut. I've managed to transfer the POP account to Outlook and it seems to work.
