Hello, after my windows 8.1 suddenly went off due to a power failure because of a blackout in the city, I turned it on to get many errors. First error is every time I want to run firefox it asks me if it should be chosen as the default browser. Second error I detected is that the view settings does not get saved for any folder I open in explorer.exe/file explorer.

I am guessing some system file or registry got corrupt due to the sudden power off.

Firefox has been updated to version 38.0.1 earlier today in my PC. I've noticed the Tools->Options was changed from a popup windows into a page and all my settings was set back to default.

Right click on the title and tick on Menu Bar then click on Tools->Options. You'll see an options page as shown:

First thing would be to run sfc /scannow: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html?ltr=S

Also, I believe there is a setting in FireFox to check for default browser or not.

SFC /Scannow does not fix this. This is not the first time or first PC I have encountered this issue. This seems to be an issue which is only for windows 8.1 and does not get fixed by, System repair, Sfc/ Scannow, or Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. I have been trying various fixes on three of my PCs but each time my PC turns off due to a power outage along the city, this happens. Slowly the System will show more error and eventually it will get unusable. Now I know it gets fixed if I re-install windows 8.1, but if I have to re-install everytime there is an accident or anything and without any recovery options that seems kinda wierd doesnt it?

Also, I updated to 38.0.1 of firefox on the morning no problem. And worked on firefox for 6 hours already.

Did any previous version of FF give you trouble as mentioned above? If not, unclick automatic FF program update, and rollback to the FF version that did not give you such trouble. I did that - shofar, v33.11 is working for me just fine. :)

Addendum: madshopkeeper is correct, FF wasn't problem; I forgot the earlier one-line about FF 38 with no problems :)

Dont think its a firefox issue. Its probably my system can not remember the settings I choose. And so it keeps changing back to default.

If my power was that unreliable I'd purchase a UPS. Forget the FF problem, not good to have power drop like that especially if something is being written to disk at the time.

I have an UPS but UPS did not have enough charge this time around which is clearly an accident the probability of this happening again is low as hell but still one time and I have to give a complete re-install of my system? Thats sad.

Maybe get everything fixed & running good & make a Macrium system image to restore back to after a power failure.
