hmm. That's because Hotmail is now actually Outlook. Mine works if you go directly to the site online through the website. perhaps you forgot your password or something. I always access my email through the web browser. I never use a client.

Clear out the data boxes you filled in when you set up your Account details even if they appear correct i.e. the User Name and Password. Use the Backspace and Del even if the box appears empty some non display characters can get in there.

You may as well do this with all the boxes you fill in.

Then input the data 100% correct. It has happened to me many times in the past.

If your using MS Office Outlooks you need to download Outlook connector then you can use Hotmail, msn, live and outlook in your desktop outlook!

Like others have said, It could be because you input the wrong server settings or you input the wrong user credentials.

As for the server settings for Hotmail which is now outlook.com as follows:

Here is the Link on how to setup your email:
Set up an email app with Outlook.com - Outlook.com Help

If you use Email client like Outlook 2013 or Windows Mail Store app then you don't need any settings

If you use other clients such as Thunderbird or others then the following are the correct settings:
Use the following settings in your email app.

  • Incoming (IMAP) Server
    • Server address: imap-mail.outlook.com
    • Port: 993
    • Encrypted Connection: SSL
  • Outgoing (SMTP) Server
    • Server address: smtp-mail.outlook.com
    • Port: 25 (or 587 if 25 is blocked)
    • Authentication: Yes
    • Encrypted Connection: TLS
  • User name: Your email address
  • Password: Your password

The other thing is your user information could be wrong or you might be using 2 factor authentication which you need to make an app password for it.
