    Email button in IE11

    Hi,

So I m setting up a new win 8.1 machine for the inlaws. The one thing I am having issues with is getting the email button to open the Mail app. Is there a way to do this? The mail app is set as default and if I click a email link it opens fine. Would like to keep the email button in the tool bar for them to use if at all possible, but its not looking good. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

Right click the task bar>click properties>place check mark in "Show windows store apps on the task bar">go to start screen call up the mail app>minimize>right click mail icon>click pin to task bar.

Getting it pinned to the task bar is not a issues getting to open from the mail button within IE is the issue. I figured with it being the default app it would just work. Switched it to thunderbird and that fixed that issues. Looks more like what they used anyway, so its probably better. Thanks for the response though.

AAH! OK you mean the little Envelope in the command bar. I haven't used that in years, I just tried it out on my machine and it didn't work either. I checked all the set default programs and protocols and found nothing either. I know it worked with Windows Live Mail on windows 7.

ya, I have not used it in years either, but they are old and don't change well so we just went another way. However I am still curious as to why it would not work. Thank for the help. I will just mess with it more another time.

In IE's Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab you should be able to set the installed E-Mail Client for what you have. I tried mine [first time since getting 8.1] and got an error that the client wasn't installed. The only E-Mail Client I have installed is SeaMonkey Mail and I could have chosen that instead of the default Microsoft Mail.

Ya, with jut the metro mail app as the default mail client I get the same error that there is not a client installed.

@David, We setup thunderbird and set that as default and it works fine. Its the solution we used in this case. However I am more interested in why the default metro mail app when set as default will not work.

    Thanks

    Hi Jeff,
I'm also been curious as to why it doesn't work too. Probably someone forgot to create a registry pointer or something(maybe one of the Master Geeks here can create/find one). I refuse to put another client on my computer when it already has one(The best I've ever tried/used to date).
I use the bing tool bar an it tells me if I have mail from my providers. On it I only keep mail, weather and maps on, everything else tuned off. When I get an email, it shows me from which provider, then I can decide to look at it through my browser or my client(pinned to task bar). Also windows 8.1 has toast notifications so simply pinning it to task bar should be enough.
