mail app from start screen doesn't start default program

Just purchased a laptop for the wife with windows 8.1 & trying to understand it

I set up live mail 2012 as her email service & pinned it to the taskbar. But when she clicks the mail tile from the start screen it ask for an account & does not start the correct program. The same is true of IE tile from the start does not start up the correct home page as the the one pinned to the task bar.............what gives?

I'm not sure if I understood your question correctly: the Mail tile is it's own app, not a short cut, and needs to be set-up. You do not need to install Windows Live Mail any more. I've been using the Mail app a couple of months now, after using WLM on Windows 7 for years, and find it way better. All your Email accounts get their own screen so there is less confusion when your reading/writing mails with different accounts.

The Mail App Icon on the Start Screen is the Mail App that comes with Windows 8.1. OK I don't like it either.

I also use Windows Live Mail, and this how you make an Icon/Tile on the Start Screen, 2 ways:

    1) Click on the Down Arrow, bottom left of the Start Screen which gets you to All Apps.
Find the Windows Live Mail Icon > Right Click > Pin to Start.

Then you will find a Windows Live Mail Icon/Tile on the far right of the Start Screen, you can then drag this to the left side of the Start Screen, thus it's there when you Startup.

    2) Right click on the Desktop Icon > Pin to Start.

These options are not available from a Taskbar Icon right click, which has other options.

The Icon/Tile created will also bring you to the Desktop as well thus efficiently getting you going. You can do a similar thing to any Desktop Application that does not make a Start Screen Icon/Tile.
