Mail App Help Please

I'm trying to get the Mail App to show my Hotmail Inbox and I can't seem to get it to work. I've set up a new email account on my pop3 server to use with Windows 8 as I don't really want any real information on the Cloud just yet so this is for testing purposes. I know that the mail app doesn't support pop accounts at the moment so I have to use Hotmail.

When I installed Windows 8 it asked for a Microsoft account so I used my new email account to set up a new Microsoft account (for example - win8@myserver.com) that seemed to go fine and I can log into my MS account on my pc and it allows me access to the Store, Calendar, People, Messaging etc. which it wouldn't allow with a local account.

I didn't expect to be able to use the mail app at all as the address was a pop address and not a @Hotmail address but when I logged into www.live.com using win8@myserver.com there was a Hotmail inbox shown with a couple of messages in it from the Windows Live Team. This got me thinking that if there was a mailbox shown on the website then maybe the contents of it should show in my Metro Mail App.

Launching the Mail app it asks me to input my ms account details to synch my mail, but when I try this it says it was unable to connect. I can't seem to find out from the live.com site what my @Hotmail address might be, assuming that the ms account creation process has created me a @Hotmail address that is different from win8@myserver.com

Can anyone offer any suggestions on how I can get the Mail App working please?

TIA

Hi.

Does your POP server have a registered domain name and is it available from the Internet?

yes.

I have also configured hotmail to access the pop account and copy the contents into the hotmail inbox. From the Live website that works fine.

The way I understand this works, when you create a Microsoft account in Windows 8, you're actually creating a Windows Live ID. The ID may or may not be associated with a live or hotmail account, in fact it can be associated with any valid email account, providing it can be verified.

In the images below, I created a fictitious email account as my live ID. There's no problem using this account to access any of the live tiles, including mail. However, to access the mail account, there must be a 'real' email account that's been verified and is available. If the 'real' email account isn't verifiable during the initial login, you'll receive a prompt for further details. From what you've said, your Windows Live ID has been associated with your POP mail account.

That all makes sense but what is the Hotmail inbox that I see when I log into the live.com site? This mailbox was there before I set Hotmail to pickup my pop mail account. Also there was a welcome email from the Windows Live Team that was not sent to my pop mail address but was in the Hotmail mailbox on the live.com site.

Assuming this mailbox is not a legitimate Hotmail account is it possible for me to set up a separate Hotmail account and associate it to this MS account/WLID?
