An excellent explanation Kari, just got to learn lessons from the mistakes and go ahead in life with more presence of mind cheerfully

Kudos to Microsoft for the newer security measures they're taking.

Unless somebody has something very serious to hide, writing down passwords in a small notebook (paper one, remember those ?) is a best bet. You can even scramble letters by some method only you know and if passwords are not recognizable words and numbers, it would take serious SW to unscramble.

Some great replies, one or two not so but thanks to all of you. I have now switched to hotmail and so far it feels great, looks good, and is fast. Now all I need to know is how to tranfser my saved emails from gmail to hotmail, I suspect that this may be a bridge too far though. When I first used hotmail a couple of decades ago, it was pretty awful, it has really improved dramatically.

If you go into Hotmail, and click the cog at the top right and then go to options

The option on the next page you want is 'import email accounts' select this and then chose gmail, it will then run in the background and import your mail
it will link gmail to your Hotmail, but after all the import is done you can remove the gmail connection

this runs in the background so might take a while if you have a lot of emails

OK, here's what to do next:

Outlook.com - Import Email Accounts and Messages

    1. Open the Outlook.com Options (Settings icon at top right, left from your name):

    2. Select Import email accounts:

    3. Select Google, notice that if Windows already knows your Gmail account it is shown here but if not you will be asked the credentials:

    4. Click Options:

    5. Select if you want the Gmail messages and folder structure imported as such into own folders which will then be created, or if you want the messages to be imported to existing Outlook.com folders. Click Start:

    6. You will now be asked for the Gmail credentials, enter them. Click Accept to let Outlook.com to start importing:

    7. Click Open Gmail to go to Gmail Inbox to read the instructions sent to you about how to set your Gmail to forward all incoming messages to Outlook.com:

    8. Do as told in the email Microsoft sent to your Gmail to set up forwarding (not obligatory):

    9. Done. Your Outlook.com folder pane at left now shows the Gmail messages:

When done, the next step would be to set up the account security as told in this tutorial: Microsoft Account Two-step Verification - Turn On or Off

I use Outlook/HotMail as a collector/garbage account, but for my main email, I use Zoho mail and POP it down to Windows Mail on Vista, and I use IMAP on SeaMonkey/Puppy Linux. Zoho is pretty good.

I do not believe this. The forum I am trying to get into said gmail was no good, as per my first post, now this:

Hotmail is the world's #2 forum spam enabler. Hotmail DOES NOT assure the authenticity of its users! Please use a different mail provider.

Filezilla FTP forum can go to hell!!

Is this your original account you use from a while back which is Hotmail.com

If so try using it with outlook.com at the end instead

I was originally on Hotmail.com (still have/use it), but when MS changed the name to outlook they also gave me an email with outlook.com, so I can use either the @Hotmail.com or @outlook.com for my email address

not sure if it will make a difference but could be worth a try

Interesting. Just to test this, I signed up at FileZilla forums. It accepted my sign up but the conformation email is yet to come, 90 minutes later:
